Sorry if this has been answered in the past. The vanilla chat window leaves a lot to be desired. What are some of the best chat add ons that might make the experience a little less painful?

I find Unified Chat Tabs incredibly useful and (at a quick glance) I didn't see the functionality included in pChat.
Basically it lets you save your chat tab settings; colours, tab names and options and load them into other characters. If you play even just 2 characters and want the same settings on both it will save a lot of time. If you're like me (4 characters and counting, and numerous re-makes of those) it's an absolute life saver.

It's included in pChat since few versions, it was just disabled by default at its release.
And the usage is also a bit simplier and the sync handles few settings more than in UCT.

I made an addon that is a very helping hand if you are using multiple chat tabs: FCO Chat Tab Brain
It is able to:
-automatically switch to incoming messages at a tab (after a chat idle time that you can setup)
-play sounds
-show colors at the chat tabs for unread messages
-enables you to remember the last person and chat channel you talked at a chat tab
-autmatically switch to the chat channel of the last incoming message so you basically only need to press RETURN and write
-redirect whispers to a selectable chat tab (so all your outgoing whisper messages will be shown at this tab and not everywhere)
-and other options
