I just wanted to share my story and see if it might spark any change of mind in the developers regarding the PC to console transfer (copy) and it's June 30th, 2014 cutoff date. And, no, this is not a qq article. This is a proposal.
The Elder Scrolls Online was announced, if I remember correctly, in May of 2012 for PC and was scheduled to be released on April 4th of 2014. In June 2013, it was announced that ESO would be available for the Playstation 4 and then later announced it would also be available for the Xbox One. Being an avid Elder Scrolls fan, and someone who already had his heart set on purchasing an Xbox One at the end of 2013, I pre-ordered and fully paid for a copy of ESO for the Xbox One. I guess that was out of my extreme faith in Bethesda and love for the Elder Scrolls franchise. When the PC version was released on April 4th and received mixed reviews from critics, my heart sank. While it was only the PC version being harshly targeted by critics, I still felt that my purchase of the console version was a mistake. On top of that, the console versions were both delayed twice, causing more doubt to set in. But I struggled to keep my faith in Bethesda, that they were working hard on a game that could be really great.
Then finally, in January of 2015, it was announced that "Tamriel Unlimited," a subscription-less relaunch of ESO, would be released on March 17th. By taking out the monthly subscription, Bethesda had successfully captured a greater audience. Don't get me wrong, making a game Free-to-Play or even Buy-to-Play can sometimes ruin it. But I believe, as well as the majority of critics, that this was a smart move made by developers.
So, what did I do? Well, of course I bought Tamriel Unlimited for PC in March. I couldn't wait to play it! After all, my pre-order and I had been waiting for the Xbox One version to come out for almost two years! Plus, I had just purchased a new gaming laptop that I couldn't wait to test it out on. As of right now, I've been playing for two weeks and it is great. It was difficult to settle in at first (you can't play it like any other MMO or Elder Scrolls game for that matter), but once I got a good feel for things, it really felt amazing.
Now, I had read and heard that those who purchased the PC game on or before June 30th of 2014 would be granted an account "copy" for the console version in which every bit of progress made on a PC account would literally be copied and pasted into a console account. However, I was not one of those that purchased it then, not only because of the mixed reviews it received, but also because I had already laid down my money for the console version. I didn't purchase the PC version back then because I didn't want to pay the initial fee for the game, and then the monthly subscription to keep it going after that when I had already pre-purchased the Xbox One version. Not to mention June 30, 2014 was less than 3 months after the game was actually released, which may have not been enough time allotted for any real improvements (patches, updates, etc.) to the game after launch. Once the subscription was removed, the purchase of ESO for PC was, in my mind, finally worth it. Even if I would be receiving my copy of ESO for the Xbox One only months after that. It has been a great opportunity to get a hands-on experience of what I will be experiencing in June. Kind of like a...beta test that I had to pay for. Only it's not a beta. It's a full game.
So, here's my proposal: grant a free account copy to those who purchased the PC game on or before June 30th of 2014, but also grant those who didn't (like me) an opportunity to do the same for a fee. I know several people who are in my shoes, and I'm sure there are hundreds of others that are as well. This would be a great opportunity for Bethesda to make some extra money on the side while allowing players to keep the characters they've created and invested in once they start on their Xbox One or PS4 account. I may be speaking for myself, but I would be more than willing to pay for it, as my experience in Tamriel Unlimited on the PC has been a very satisfactory one.
I know Bethesda's intention with the cutoff date is to ensure everyone understands that the Xbox One and PS4 versions are not "ports"; that they want an entirely different experience out of each game. But I, and I'm sure many others, would love to have a chance at experiencing our personal characters, characters we've invested time and heart into, with a different play-style and whatever else Bethesda has changed with the console version. I would still be willing to start new characters as well. In fact, I'm sure I'll want to once I see how it works on the console.
