PC to Console Transfer (Copy)

I just wanted to share my story and see if it might spark any change of mind in the developers regarding the PC to console transfer (copy) and it's June 30th, 2014 cutoff date. And, no, this is not a qq article. This is a proposal.

The Elder Scrolls Online was announced, if I remember correctly, in May of 2012 for PC and was scheduled to be released on April 4th of 2014. In June 2013, it was announced that ESO would be available for the Playstation 4 and then later announced it would also be available for the Xbox One. Being an avid Elder Scrolls fan, and someone who already had his heart set on purchasing an Xbox One at the end of 2013, I pre-ordered and fully paid for a copy of ESO for the Xbox One. I guess that was out of my extreme faith in Bethesda and love for the Elder Scrolls franchise. When the PC version was released on April 4th and received mixed reviews from critics, my heart sank. While it was only the PC version being harshly targeted by critics, I still felt that my purchase of the console version was a mistake. On top of that, the console versions were both delayed twice, causing more doubt to set in. But I struggled to keep my faith in Bethesda, that they were working hard on a game that could be really great.

Then finally, in January of 2015, it was announced that "Tamriel Unlimited," a subscription-less relaunch of ESO, would be released on March 17th. By taking out the monthly subscription, Bethesda had successfully captured a greater audience. Don't get me wrong, making a game Free-to-Play or even Buy-to-Play can sometimes ruin it. But I believe, as well as the majority of critics, that this was a smart move made by developers.

So, what did I do? Well, of course I bought Tamriel Unlimited for PC in March. I couldn't wait to play it! After all, my pre-order and I had been waiting for the Xbox One version to come out for almost two years! Plus, I had just purchased a new gaming laptop that I couldn't wait to test it out on. As of right now, I've been playing for two weeks and it is great. It was difficult to settle in at first (you can't play it like any other MMO or Elder Scrolls game for that matter), but once I got a good feel for things, it really felt amazing.

Now, I had read and heard that those who purchased the PC game on or before June 30th of 2014 would be granted an account "copy" for the console version in which every bit of progress made on a PC account would literally be copied and pasted into a console account. However, I was not one of those that purchased it then, not only because of the mixed reviews it received, but also because I had already laid down my money for the console version. I didn't purchase the PC version back then because I didn't want to pay the initial fee for the game, and then the monthly subscription to keep it going after that when I had already pre-purchased the Xbox One version. Not to mention June 30, 2014 was less than 3 months after the game was actually released, which may have not been enough time allotted for any real improvements (patches, updates, etc.) to the game after launch. Once the subscription was removed, the purchase of ESO for PC was, in my mind, finally worth it. Even if I would be receiving my copy of ESO for the Xbox One only months after that. It has been a great opportunity to get a hands-on experience of what I will be experiencing in June. Kind of like a...beta test that I had to pay for. Only it's not a beta. It's a full game.

So, here's my proposal: grant a free account copy to those who purchased the PC game on or before June 30th of 2014, but also grant those who didn't (like me) an opportunity to do the same for a fee. I know several people who are in my shoes, and I'm sure there are hundreds of others that are as well. This would be a great opportunity for Bethesda to make some extra money on the side while allowing players to keep the characters they've created and invested in once they start on their Xbox One or PS4 account. I may be speaking for myself, but I would be more than willing to pay for it, as my experience in Tamriel Unlimited on the PC has been a very satisfactory one.

I know Bethesda's intention with the cutoff date is to ensure everyone understands that the Xbox One and PS4 versions are not "ports"; that they want an entirely different experience out of each game. But I, and I'm sure many others, would love to have a chance at experiencing our personal characters, characters we've invested time and heart into, with a different play-style and whatever else Bethesda has changed with the console version. I would still be willing to start new characters as well. In fact, I'm sure I'll want to once I see how it works on the console.

i have to say i'm in the exact same boat as you and i kinda don't wanna waste my money on eso plus if i'm not going to be transferring my account and i also haven't spent as much time on this because i realized that in June i'll have to start all over again on console and to Zenimax and Bethesda i'll happily pay any fee for the transfer.

I am one of those that will get to transfer. They have already said this will not be a free transfer and we will have to pay for it to happen.

So I don't think they will be taking up your suggestion.

It is $20 to transfer if you qualify for the copy over to console so as someone else has said it is not free.

To give the offer context they made the offer in May when they announced that the game would be delayed for console. The offer was made as an apology to people that wanted to play on console but couldn't and it involved those players purchasing the game on PC and paying the sub from purchase until the Unlimited launch or in my case until May because I was on a 6 month sub :)

Good luck with the request OP.

I know that it's not free. My idea was to grant a free copy to those who qualify and allow the others that don't qualify an opportunity to pay for it. I think that would be a fair agreement, don't you?

No because part of it is getting the game for £20 and the transfer all in one.

If they gave me the transfer free I don't get the game for £20

Okay, so you get the game and the copy for 20 total. What's wrong with those who have already paid full price for the console version paying an extra 20 or so for the copy? That's all I'm really trying to get at.

It seems like ZOS has learned how to perform character copies if the PTS is any indication. I can't think of a good reason why the servers for the consoles could not have copied characters on them prior to launch. There might need to be some changes to the console login or account screens in order to associate accounts; but I would hope that is not much of a deterrent.

The first group of transfers to form a guild and win the bid on Vulkhel Guard docks trader is going to make a freakin' fortune. Allowing players who bought the PC version after the cut off date to transfer should help mitigate the market monopoly we will see.

I think the only concept about who can and who can't transfer is based on ZOS failing to hit their console release date. I don't think its anything else so to be fair, the cut off date is the month when a console player who really wanted to play would have made a purchase.

Those who supported the PC instead should get a discount and an account copy considering....

While many others bring up a lot of interesting points, I don't think anything other than ZOS' official announcement about this should be considered. Its like the mount conversation...all over again.
