Log in server down? EU

james_vestbergb16_ESO
Can't log in. At the games login-screen the game says: Could not retrieve announcement. When typing in my password I get the associated error message.

What's up?

I just logged in to the NA megaserver, am logged in now and everything seems fine.

If you're still not able to log in, the problem is probably not on the server.

NA or EU? I can log into NA just fine. Haven't patched EU yet, so not sure on that one.

    It's likely your connection though.

If you get an error message check it against the list in the General Help forum.

EU, tried all the usuall stuff, first time the usuall stuff haven't solved it for me.

The error message is just the one telling me to check the forums if the problem persists.

    Connection is fine, I'm typing here are'nt I ;)

Without patching myself (on my way to work) - the only think I can think is check the Version number at the bottom of the login screen. Sometimes it doesn't patch right and you can get past the launcher without actually having the right version. If it's not 2.0.2{whatever} it will fail login and the news won't always work.

    Its the correct version :(

Also tried deleting launcher.version and let the launcher update that again, checked firewall etc etc. I know what I'm doing when it comes to this stuff, so I'ts got to be something beyond the normal things.

    Appreciate the help guys. :)

Hrm...I'd guess by the lack of utter rage and whining on the forums - the EU servers are likely fine.

Have you done the reboot cycle? Computer / router / modem? (Assuming yes, but always safe to check.)

Ye done that. The error code I get is 201, authentication failure, the fixes suggested by zeni on the forum are laughable but still I tried them with no success...

Yeah, funny how they want you to delete the elder scrolls folder in Documents, where all the addons and It's settings files are located, yet they don't warn you that perhaps you should make backups, just LOL.

Found a post with more ppl having the same issue, in the PC Technical support forum..

I just logged in EU fine...took longer than usual for everything to load up though.
Perhaps the log in server was at capacity ?
    Try again

Ye that's my thoughts aswell, wish they had a separate "error" message for that, would save ppl alot of anguish

Pretty annoying seeing the "Could not retrieve announcement", When you see that there's no point in trying to "login".

    I'll just have to wait.

    Hey there @james_vestbergb16_ESO,

We know it's an old classic, but have you tried a repair just yet? If not, please give it a shot and let us know if it helps. To do that, close the game and open the launcher. Select Game Options above the news articles, and choose Repair from the drop down.

Hi @ZOS_GaryA , appreciate your respons. Yes i have tried the repair, no luck.

To make it painfully obvious, lemme put it like this:

Yesterday I played the game just fine, logged off around midnight swedish time. Did not download anything on my PC, did not change and or update anything on my PC.

I logged on today, patched the game and the problem occured. Apart from the possibility of it beeing "internet" related, there really isn't any chance in, pardon my french, hell that this could be on the "customers" end. Between you and me, I think you know this ;)

And yes the different fixes, in regards to the router etc, all have been tried ofc.

I appreciate that you took the time to respond, when the issue is solved please let me know, In the meantime I'm gonna watch some episodes of True Detective. If you havent seen it yet, you should my friend :)

    Hey there @james_vestbergb16_ESO,

Plenty of folks are hopping on to EU without issues, so we'd just like to be sure all the basics are covered before raising the alarm bells, so to speak. Error 201 and 301 indicate a connectivity issue, which is generally client-side, hence starting with a bit of troubleshooting first.

In order to prevent repeat suggestions, here's the stuff you've tried in the thread so far:
    • Restart router/PC (bear in mind that while these may seem so silly that they're skippable, it honestly solves 201 pretty frequently)
    • Clean boot
    • Repair
    • Deleted Documents folder

Most often, we see this occur after an update based on an anti-virus or firewall program blocking the connection. If you happen to have an anti-virus/firewall program running, please give a try to temporarily disabling it and give a shot to running ESO. If it works, please be sure to add an exception to your anti-virus for the ESO folder, then enable the program again.

If that doesn't work, please let us know and we'll be happy to continue helping!
I'll definitely take a look into True Detective, seems right up my alley :).

Whenever I update a game or important program I delete the associated rules made by my firewall, ESET Nod32 in my case, turn on "Learning" mode and let the firewall create new rules upon launch of said game/program.

Learning mode lets everything through, same as turning the firewall off(mind you I have tried turning it off aswell).

Still getting the same message upon arriving at the login screen. "Could not retrieve announcement".

I know this means that my PC cannot communicate with the logon server, however I have no other internet related communication issues whatsoever atm with any of my other games/programs.

Which ofc means this is locked down to this specific game, and if my PC in no way is hindered in communicating over the internet and my firewall is letting ESO through, then it leads me to believe it's not on my end.

Add to the list I have tried all associated DNS cleaning tips related to the 201 error, as adviced in the related official forum post.

    Hey there @james_vestbergb16_ESO,

We have some specific steps for ESET that might just help out! Give these a shot and let us know if they work:
ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus both include a feature underneath "Protocol Filtering" that is known as SSL Scanning. This feature allows the program to scan the SSL (Secure Socket Layer) which is a secure protocol used by some websites and programs. The SSL Scanning feature enabled in Smart Security and NOD32 Antivirus may read the SSL certificate for our game improperly causing the connection to fail. To fix this, please close out the game/launcher and attempt the following:
    • Open ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus.
    • Press F5 to access Advanced setup.
    • Expand Web and email Protocol filtering, click SSL and select Ask about non-visited sites (exclusions can be set).
    • Click OK to close Advanced setup.
    • Run the Launcher and Game again, stopping for any SSL prompts that come up.
    • The Encrypted SSL communication dialog will prompt you to select an action to take. Select "Yes, always".
    • Click Yes if you receive a prompt from Windows.
    • Press F5 to access Advanced setup.
    • Expand Web and email Protocol filtering, click SSL and select Always scan SSL protocol. Once you are finished, click OK to save your changes.

If this still does not work, in Advanced Setup, expand Web and email, Protocol Filtering, and then SSL and set the SSL protocol filtering mode to "Do not scan SSL protocol".
