Hello, I have had no problems with load times so far but after the patch I just did it's taking quite awhile to get into the character selection screen after typing in my username and password. When I finally got in after playing for awhile, I traveled and it ended up to a endless load screen. Not sure if it's my internet or other people are having problems, Just wanted to know

It always takes an eternity to get the character select the first time you log in after a patch. As for endless load screens on traveling, this is also bug that creeps up from time to time. Annoying, but I don't think it's anything new.

Eleven months of seemingly endless loading screens after Every. Single. Patch.
Stuttering sound, several minutes before character select appears, then getting stuck in the first character load, often with a forced logout after a few minutes. After every single patch since launch.

Seriously, what IS the game doing here that takes forever?

I have run into this issue also. I long screen to get to character select and a long one after I select.

Loading screens are just that: stuff being loaded into your client in the background. That includes graphic objects, VFX, NPC locations and AI scripts, and data on other players' locations and actions.

How long it takes is highly dependent on the number of NPCs and players in the area your character can perceive. The static data for the graphic objects and VFX are on your PC (part of your client's database); the static data required to render the NPCs and other players are on your PC; the scripts for the NPCs and mobs are on your PC; but the volatile info about NPC, mob, and player locations and current actions must come from the server.

If, for whatever reason, your client can't load some of the data from your harddrive or isn't getting good data across the Internet (e.g., failed CRC on multiple messages), your client is going to re-attempt to load the static data or request a retransmission of the volatile NPC/mob/player data. Loading and messaging actions are normally handled within a loop, normally with a limit on number of retries or a time-out on network delays.

At least that is how things are normally set up with most games...

Why do we see the periodic delays? Probably a combination of poor database structure and netcode...
