Horse (mount) apparition

Hi,

I don't have the game yet (waiting console version) but I saw some videos and what I think should be improved is how mounts are appearing. Now you jsut have to whistle and your mount is appearing just like that.
What I recommand is when you whistle, the mount is coming from somewhere else to look more natural. Maybe behind a house and is coming on you or something else like that.
Another thing could be to make that like Skyrim where you have stables to put or take your mount and when you disembark it in a battle, he go away and if it's somewhere without enemies, he just stay here. Like that when you explore, he stay there and you just have to go back to travel with your mount again :)

What do you think?

The horse acting as an NPC kind of think cannot be implement at all, and even if it could it would make teh game VERY laggy, it would also be annoying and stupid for players who do not care for that kind of thing.

This is an MMO, things are different here than a single player RPG.

Nice idea but not practical in an MMO where performance and lag are already issues.

Having the horses stay in the world when you're not using them would cause a lot of lag. It works in Skyrim (and Oblivion) because there's just one horse for the game to keep track of (and because it's not online). When there's 20 or 30 in a town it's a lot of models to display.

Also one big advantage this system has over Skyrim is forgetful people like me never have to come out of a dungeon or cave or whatever and spend ages searching for their horse (which is twice as annoying because it always seems to be night when I finish exploring in that game).

It would be nice if they could do something like Dragon Age Inquisition does, where the horse appears a few feet behind you and walks up, as if it was following you the whole time. But I'm not sure if that would also cause a lot of problems.

Totally off topic question. If you don't have the game yet... how are you on the forums? I'm just wondering, I thought you got the forum account after purchasing the game

I think they could have it to where you see your mount stay and no one else's.... would barely have any performance hit at all.

It could be completely practical in an MMO... an MMO doesn't HAVE to be a PVP Grindquest that's a rush to end game... an MMO RPG could be a vibrant deep experience where players from all over the world experience the same world together.

It's the type of thinking that an MMO is what it is and can't be anything else that has lead to many of ESO failings. There is always... ALWAYS ways to implement concepts, ZOS just needs to be clever about it.

I would like something more realistic than what we have now. For exemple, mount should appear out of the screen and come to you. Same thing when you disembark... The horse is just running away from the screen.

Or something like Skyrim, but only you can see your horse (because it will be buggy if you see 100 horses lol), but when you embark on it, people can see you mount on him.
  • c.p.garrett1993_ESO
I like the idea another user suggested:
Have the mount appear from just behind you, rather than beside you.
This way it looks more realistic (unless zoomed out) and does not have any effect on lag.

When you dismount your horse it can run back off behind you again.

Or they could just make it so the horse is conjured? Perhaps use a magic whistle instead of the current animation? That way any non-mages have a lore-friendly explanation.

The idea alone is nice, but for instance in cyrodiil where every player contributes to lagg, if they also had a mount ontop of that....ouch.

no, i do not think you understand what we mean about it being "impractical".

IT is impractical because, well, that picture up there should tell you one reason

secondly, it increases lag by A LOT, and guess what, this game already HAS problems with it, especialy in PVP

basically, right from teh start it fails in an MMO becuase of there being so many players and the fact that EVERYONES games have to load it.

Could not work that way, would require a major reword of how Horeses work in the gameworld, so yeah, that is out of the picture idea

it basically boils down to this: nothing is going to happen, it would require too much work for something most people probably care little about, and the lag would be horrible.

Did you read my tangible mounts concept @PKMN12?

Also, what would be causing the lag, exactly? I recommend the tangibilty be toggled off in Cyrodiil, like pets.

because, again, it would require quite a bit of coding to change the behavior of the horses, and i think anyone with any knowledge at this point knows this is not going to happen, they would have little to no gain from it for money and time spent on this.

What was cause lag is that every mount owned by every player would stay in the world even when not in use. So in a crowded town where the majority of objects the game is having to load are players that would effectively double the load on the server.

It's nothing to do with MMOs being "PVP grindfests", it's to do with the limitations of the technology. There's a lot of complaints about lag in this game already and even ZOS have expressed concerns about it so it's not just a few people with poor internet connections complaining over and over. I think at this point it's extremely unlikely they would consider doing anything that's going to add to the problem.

having your mount appears 5 feet away from you, from behind your point of view....

..instead appearing right next to you.

should NOT affect server performance. All the animation are done by the PC. there should be ZERO difference on what the server sees other than "char calling mount, mounting animation, char currently mounted". that's it. should be ZERO netcode if implemented correctly and would make SO MUCH better immersion.

I know. LOTRO had the same issue and they tweaked it. (I kinda helped...)

PS: just to be clear, i'm not saying a mount should always be there. it's simply where it shows up. It has ZERO affect on LAG. Nill. Nada.
