i have max light fingers, and yet it seems that every 90% chance i get caught. literally 8 times out of 10 i get caught on a 90%. if someone could check to see if the percentages are working correctly id be grateful

I agree those percentages seem wildly inaccurate. haha!

Well, what they meant to say was "You have an 80% chance of pickpocketing. But there's only a 10% chance of that."

I have to agree that people seem to defy 80% chances or higher way more than 2/10 times or less.

What you see is the chance your victim won't notice you. You can still fail a 'sneak check' with other NPCs looking at you and they won't fail to report you.

This seems to be the key thing here. If you pickpocket (for example) an easy target who is standing right across from someone, they won't notice you. But the person across from them most likely will.

i understand how it works, ive been a TES fan since morrowind. im talking about that im the only other person in a room, and pickpocketing is at 90%, most of the time it fails

I have also seen this happen on occasion. If you're sure that you aren't being noticed by another NPC, I'd recommend reporting it. There may be a bug.

Alternatively, you may just be really unlucky.

The issue I found with pickpocking is as follows

Each NPC can be pick picked 3 times before out of items and the percentage chance gets harder each time.

Player X pick pocks the NPC three times (90%, 60% then 30% chance)
Then Player Y comes alone and tries to pick pocket the same NPC, it will show them a 90% chance, but based on the number I have tested (still it could be just bad random) I only really have a 30% chance cause Player X has robbed them blind already.

Also it does not matter what the percentage is if some other NPC can see you,

That's interesting, and it would definitely explain a lot.

Although it's still worth noting that the percentage decrease isn't that dramatic, since it only lowers by 5-10% for each successful pickpocket attempt.

I wondered if this was buggy as well. I haven't even made that many pickpocket attempts because it almost always fails. I used to do a ton of pickpocketing in Oblivion so I have a good idea of how it should work.

Am a whimsical Generation Jones gamer. Online RPGs hooked me since '94 and no sign of stopping soon...
