A Login Question

On the main login screen of the game (after the intro movies), there are two options 1) A trusted machine 2) An untrusted Machine. What is the tech differences between the two? Does the untrusted use SSL or some other security layer to protect the sending the date through a public network? I do why and how to use the two options, but I am asking about the the technical under layer of the options.

I'm pretty sure "trusted" means that after the first time the game will no longer ask you to enter a code that is e-mailed to you. If you use "untrusted" it will ask you for a email code every time you login.
