Shield size has bugged me since Beta...

This really has became an outstanding game IMO. BUT, the one thing that REALLY drives me nuts is the ridiculously tiny shield sizes. I'm just curious as to why the developers seemingly skipped over this seemingly simple, but rather large detail, and would it be difficult for them to change? A quick google search would grant you the knowledge needed to scale these shields up to size... And man would it make that aspect of the game look so much better.

The higher level the shield, the bigger they get.

here's a piccy with a high level shield

I think at level 40 they get max size.

This is true, I know... But even still, the only two shields that are relatively scaled to a realistic size are the one pictured above, and the breton shield is KINDA close. The PVP shield is remotely close to what a round shield would resemble, but even it falls noticeably short.

EDIT: Hmm actually probably not.. That's still 32 men. In my head i pictured a mass formation of like 200 peeps doing it.

Big shields like that are really formation shields and aren't for individuals to be using wandering around.

Wouldn't expect anything like that from anyone but imperials.

Too much "free hand" spell casting and swashbuckling in Tamriel to be lugging a tabletop around with you.

Imagine trying to sneak with your very own closet door.

hehe.... my closest is doubled folding. Shallow Closest but its very wide...

i could only take half of it with me.

even then the half would probably just fold on the hinge and make it look like only Michel jorden holding it inline with his side profile could hide behind it.

I'm not talking about kite shields tho, but rather shields like the spartans and vikings used. Although, yes.. It would certainly make sense for imperials to have kite shields. (Yes these image is from a tv show, but the shield sizes are historically accurate. )VIKINGS-S1-Trial.jpg

What a round shield might resemble. Targes were about half a meter in diameter, bucklers were even smaller.

Anybody care to make a guess about sizes of shields in each racial style? I remember a few looked to be nearing a meter.

I want a shield that can protect my Loins, not a shield that protects my hand up to the knee :O

Who said anything about targes or bucklers? Those are two very small and specialized shields, and exceptions to shields in general.

Typical "viking shields" were from 80-92cm in diameter, or nearly 3 feet.

Wow, what video cars are you using? Looks amazing, great screen grab of EP you have there.

Been here since Feb 2014 - You'd think I'd be half reasonable at this game by now...

I dunno, I think at least some of the endgame shields are roughly that size. My Orc one is, and I realize it is kinda bigger than others.

I'm absolutely for more shields that size. I'd also like to paint them with dyes. I was a bit iffy on big-as roman styles though.

I My Templar is an Orc wearing Breton Plate and using an Orc shield. Looks good.

My Kajit DK is a lot lower class, and I'd love to have a full- sized wooden round shield. for him. He's not as shiny a character.

I'd love for us to be able to craft "low" level stuff out of high level materials too. Some of the looks, even the small shields would be great fashion choices for some looks.

Typical viking shields faded out of use in the mid 11th century. Generally speaking, as armor improved, shields became specialized for either blocking missile weapons or melee weapons. That being said, soldiers in less armor usually used larger shields. This eventually evolved to the point of archers using pavise and other full body shields after crossbows became the norm.

My favorite large shield is the Orcish style. This is my lvl 48 Orc with his shield.

    Screenshot%202015-03-14%2000.25.44.png

And although the first tier orc design is also a small round shield, i'm pretty sure that they adopt this style and size at lvl 16 so good for a low level large shield bearer.

A shield is a shield. ZOS needs to consider different types and sizes when designing racial styles - and take player preferences into account too. Some people like smaller, less restrictive shields, so they should be an option. Besides, we're in full body armor, we don't need that much protection from the shield.

Is this Orc shield above really too small for you?

It would be nice if you had one "roman" type shield among the variety of shields (imperial seems most fit for that).

It would also be nice if different shields had different bonuses, depending on the shield type.
Smaller shields should get less defense but hinder aspects like sneak less then bigger shields.
Thing like the "roman" shields could even have a sneaking penalty.
