Is This Justice?

Howdy everyone,

On a quest today I was approaching a house (outside of any city) and was attacked by several npc's. In the ensuing fight, my crushing shock randomly targeted and hit a chicken - you know how it likes to randomly pick on the little creatures. So ok, I got the disreputable tag, whatever. I won't argue the moral wisdom in labeling me a criminal for defending myself and causing a civilian poultry casualty. No biggie, my bounty was 6 gold. When arriving in the big city to turn in my quest, I see a guard approaching me and I get ready to pony up the bounty for my animal cruelty. But no, this guard didn't want my gold, he wanted my life. No option to pay, just death at the hands of the ever-immortal guards.

Lots to be frustrated at in game these days, I figured best to complain about the little things. So how about it ZOS, can we rename this system? Is this really justice?

I would think you can disable that by enabling "prevent attack innocents" in the options menu.

Yes I know I could disable this, but I don't want to. I want the option, in fact the night before i had a good time with a friend killing an entire village. And yes, I had the gold on me, and the guard pried it from my cold, dead hands.

I don't know, I didn't check. It didn't occur to me that it was possible to be KILL ON SIGHT for 1 lousy chicken owned by thieves attacking me. For all I know, it was one of those fighting roosters and my life was in peril. Bet I could get a jury to buy that one.

Your heat was in the red scale and guards will kill you on sight when it is on. This is how the justice system works.

That you would get so much heat from killing poultry or livestock in general, however, is ... regrettable.

Absolutely correct. You could save everyone from a world eating dragon, but if you kill one chicken the whole world (you've just saved) would be on your heels wanting revenge.

The one that got me....there is a quest where I was required to break into a house by picking the lock to prove the guilt or innocence of a NPC. I promptly turned in the quest, and then got arrested and had to pay the bounty for my good deed. What the heck? That is what gets me. I think the new Justice System adds some interesting features (not sure I like them all) but there are definite problems (among the already problem riddled game). Perhaps when 2.3.12 goes live, this will get some attention?
Follow me if I advance, Kill me if I retreat, Avenge me if I die.

When this immediate evil power has been defeated, we shall not yet have won the long battle with the elemental barbarities. Another evil, it may be an invisible adversary, will attempt, again, and yet again, to destroy our frail civilization. Is it true, I wonder, that the only way to escape a war is to be in it?

If I die, you are forgiven, If I live, I will kill you.

The topic title is, of course, Di Niro's ranting final refrain as Al Capone in the film, The Untouchables.

Couldn't find that....though this clip does display the irony of that final speech...

You can't get kill on sight status from killing a chicken. It was either a bug or you already had a previous bounty and that chicken brought you over the threshold.

The news of your previous fowl-play had reached the guard's ears and he knew what he had to do. He showed egg-cellent judgement in ending your reign of terror quickly and decisively. He would have sent you to the firing squad but they had run out of pullets.

I had the same problem. I was fighting some NPC's and one of my allies got hit by an AOE spell. Suddenly they are all hostile got a 900 gold bounty and a kill on site order.

I like justice but it's a bit too easy to clip a friendly NPC and regardless of the fact I just saved their life now they want to kill me, and what's worse I get a large bounty.

Your whole post is confusing and potentially misleading.....why?.....because>>

You killed NPCs the night before, racked up a huge bounty, got killed by guard's that night but STILL didn't pay off the bounty...the chickens the next day were, chickenfeed, not the real problem. You hadn't satisfied your previous bounty, that's why, I surmise, they came after you, not for the poultrycide...you can find your bounty on your "attributes" menu. The UI doesn't always update on screen, you are better off looking at the menu....FYI: sheep and critters are about 8-16g bounty. Each.

I guess my post must have been confusing because you misunderstood. Yes I killed NPCs the night before and racked up a huge bounty - which I paid off before I logged off for the night, with the confirmation that I was again "upstanding". I had done a lot of adventuring the next day in towns amidst guards without issue - until the chicken died. My death was solely related to the chicken.
