So do I have to keep checking the client every 15 minutes to see if "PLAY" has changed to "UPDATE" or whatever & then click on it? I don't remember from last time.

Leave your launcher up and go away and do stuff. One of two things will happen:

    1. The patch will start downloading when its available. (I dont think this will be the case unless you played PTS.)
    2. When the patch becomes available, a message like "Manifest Unavailable" will appear on your screen. This means your launcher needs to be restarted to install the updated launcher. Once you have finished that, your download will start.

    :o

Is this new? On my new PC I had not installed the PTS ever and always just left my launcher open. The patch was always downloaded and installed by the time I got home, I never clicked "update".

    ... ...

I did use the PTS this round, but it's installed as a completely separate install on my hard drive (not on the SSD eso is on). You sir, have officially made me REALLY paranoid.

How do you propose they get all the high-res textures and audio to your computer?

I think they forgot to give me that patch...

    It's 2015, this is normal.

It's not ZOS's fault that you have a cap / possible outdated tech that can't handle normal games to be honest.

What ZOS needs to understand is some countries isp's don't offer unlimited bandwidths unless you are willing to pay through the nose for them, and my tech is just fine thankyou. Thing is this is a new pc I just installed the client last week after jumping through many hoops because it decided to download the NA client not the EU, there goes a nice chunk, and now we have this being thrown at us, another client sized patch for an update/expansion, tell me im not the only one shaking my head at this.

How little memory do you have in your PC that this is a problem? Again, and no offense, it's not ZOS's fault that you are in that situation. Sadly you are only X amount of the playerbase, it's just business.

But yes, that does suck for you that you are in that position, but you need to prepare for the reality that this is going to be normal for modern games.

Remember: They replace some files. So, yes you must download the game again. Partially.

^ This. They haven't figured out how to patch a 200 MB change into a 5 GB file, so you have to re-download the entire 5 GB file.

Make smaller files using object oriented programming to your advantage?

He is talking about internet data, some people are limited by caps before the isp takes a good chunk of money when you go past the cap. In addition to downloading games, most people share their internet with family who watch streamed videos (or stream themselves).

Yeah, his problem has exactly nothing to do with memory in his PC. Clearly, based on his post (and the fact that it said exactly this), his problem is with the bandwidth he gets from his ISP. If it's not unlimited (and he said it isn't) and he has already downloaded both the NA and EU clients this month, then his bandwidth is going to be pretty much gone.

You misunderstand him, outside the USA it is normal practice for internet providers to cap your monthly data usage. They do so in one of two ways either:

    a) They give you unlimited but only X (1 to 100 gigs) amount is at full speed (15mbps) after that you can do as much as you like but it is throttled to a much lower speed (say .5 to 1.5 mbps).

    b) The give you a limited amount such as 15 gigs and each gig beyond that costs $5

Typically a plans like these costs $50 to $150 a month (so comparable rates to what we pay in the USA). Its similar to how we do mobile data in the USA but they end up doing it for wired data.

If you were in this circumstance getting a large file (30 gig) at once could really screw up your monthly allotment. Its perfectly reasonable for the op to be frustrated with circumstances that he cannot control.

I'm just glad I've got fiber in the USA so 1gbps unthrottled and unlimited data for $50 a month, but I do feel for OP and other internationals in his situation.

I understood the cap portion; but he also made it sound like his PC couldn't handle all the memory consumption too.

no no its not a problem with the pc I have terabytes of HD space and 64gig of ram, its the actual bandwidth allocated to people by their isp's that is a problem for some, specially when the isp doesn't supply unlimited bandwidth except for unreasonable costs like where I live. If I go over the bandwidth limit for the month my net speed gets throttled and becomes almost useless.

I work far from home so I am on a mobile connection in the week with a 5 gb cap, which is enough for normal gaming, but I can't download anything.

During the weekend my cap on my wired connection is 20gb so I'll probably just have enough bandwidth to download it. It will probably take the entire weekend to download it though. The speed on my exchange is limited to 4 Mbps :'(

In most of the other MMOs I play the size of a full expansion has so far never been greater than the size of a DVD (+-8 GB) and is usually less, and the size of new patches is generally limited to about 2-3 gb. I feel the fact that we have to re-download part of the game is ridiculous. I checked the installation size of the ESO software after the last 14GB patch we had; it did not change by much.

Surely there is better patching technology available to the one currently being used for this game?

    • Fourth rule: only invited players can test.
    • Fifth rule: one invite at a time, fellas.
    • Sixth rule: crying or bashing on pts.
    • Seventh rule: NDA will go on as long as they have to.
    • And the eighth and final rule: If this is your first invite at Morrowind, you have to play.

Perhaps where you come from they launch rockets my friend. Here a very large portion of the population still live in shacks made from corrugated iron or natural materials, and do not have access to sanitation, drinking water and electricity. Also, electricity is intermittent and your power can be switched off at any time of the day and not come on for hours or sometimes even days.

If the house here that one is lucky enough to be staying in, is lucky enough to have a wired telephone connection that is lucky enough to be connected to an exchange with ADSL, then you can just thank your lucky stars that you at least get 4 Mbps and not have to rely on an intermittent mobile connection. Perhaps we should swap for a year and see if you still feel the same?

Back on topic, I still think they could improve patching efficiency and decrease the download size...

The patch is downloading now. About 13GB from the last update initially, but it might do this in multiple stages, so who knows. So now we wait :)

I'm guessing that they still don't provide alternate means for downloading patches, like most other MMOs have for the last decade? I could download 10gb in a matter of minutes at work, but ~a day at home.
  • black-gryphonb14_ESO
Well part one of my update was 13.3gb - installed it taking install to 10% -

    THEN

Patch Manifest failed - told to restart launcher and repair

    THEN

No repair option and began downloading 13.5GB and back at 0%

At home this will take me over a week running 24hrs a day. Library is only accessible 12hrs a day, had been hoping to have it done today now I have no idea if I've started fresh or if this next 13.5GB file is part two of todays download.

ZOS - get your ducks in a row and include patch sizes in the patch info - how many files and their size. Good for us that have slow DL speeds or have to go to a public library to DL - and it would eliminate all the guessing from wannabe helpers in these forums.
