Game dropping out, starting today?

I was playing one of my characters on the test server and after playing for a while I spoke to one of the NPCs that moved the story along (not a vendor).
The game instantly dropped to the desktop.

I tried several times and the situation got worse until it started dropping out as soon as my character appeared on the screen.

I tried another character and after a shot time the same thing happened.

I switched to the live server and after playing for a while it dropped out again, once more when talking to an NPC that was quest related.

Now as soon as any of the characters that I've already had drop out appears on the screen it drops out again.

Any help appreciated.

Came back to say that I solved this by lowering my graphics quality.
I don't know why I had to do that because I've played since beta at ultimate settings but that seems to have fixed it for now.
