Er, why would the game want any voice system built-in, let alone probably the least-used of the 'big three'?

Have you ever actually used mumble in a game? It can do 3d positional audio which would be a great way to do voice with so many people. Basically you can hear peoples voices coming from their characters, so when there's 100 of your defending a keep you could still have voice comms with all those people, but it wouldn't be like having 100 people in a teamspeak server, because they're not all yelling in your ear unless you're stacked on each other.

Would it add to lag to have voice positions assigned to characters on a battlefield?

Anything they add will introduce lag. If they added fleas to the remaining deer in Cyrodiil it would cripple the server.

As far as I know mumble just takes numbers that the game client outputs(your coordinates in the virtual world) and uses that when playing audio to other people on the mumble server. The mumble server would probably be a separate server similar to how teamspeak is, so I can't see how it would lag the game at all. The game client already knows our positions in the game world, it just needs to be programmed to output that information for mumble to use.

ZOS could easily just add mumble support, but I would rather see them take the extra step to incorporate mumble directly into the game client so it's just part of the game and people wouldn't have to do anything except press the talk button. But, this option would require ZOS to host a mumble server, and support problems associated with mumble.

I still play a popular mod for BF2(realitymod.com) that has incorporated mumble into their game and it works amazingly. It's by far the best voice communication solution that I've ever used in a video game. It was a pain when they first started supporting it because you had to install mumble, join the right server, get in the right room, and have the right version for it all to work, but now it's seamlessly integrated into the game and the player never has to think about it, it just works.

What ESO could do with mumble is make it so groups get their own channel, allowing people in a group to talk over distance, while still being able to talk to non group members in your proximity. This would make it so mumble does everything that teamspeak or ventrilo do, on top of being able to talk to random players you encounter along the way.

If you've never tried mumble, here's a random video that shows mumble in action, it's easier to notice the 3d audio with headphones... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLFNkRDZlYY

    wtf is mumble?

It's an open source voice over IP solution that allows positional audio.(Your voice comes from your avatar rather than right in everyones faces like normal VOIP)

Wow, this would be awesome! And it would work without adding any lag to ESO's server.

    Edit:
The coordinates would be wrong though if a player is in a different location/instance. It wouldn't be a big problem.
