In my opinion, the new name sounds "cheap" and i think it would have been just as good with old name. What is your opinion, was the name change of the game unnecessary and silly marketing idea?

Games like LOTRO and Rift changed model and didn't need a new brand name, and to be honest 'Unlimited' is such a nebulous word I fail to see how it conveys what I assume ZOS' marketing department thought it would.

    I chose the last option.

Yes, I think "Tamriel Unlimited" sounds cheap.

"The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited"

The first time I heard it, I laughed. It sounds ridiculous when you think about all those other F2P MMORPGs out there.

I am sure there are many many other names that would sound better.

"The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unleashed"

    ... A Storm Unleashed

    ... A Broken Realm

    And so on.

Just a quick example of what would have sounded better (imho). ;)

If you count all past titles of games, there couldn't be one left. Unlimited is also in use, fyi.

I don't think the new name is horrible, and I understand why it was done.....to reflect the change in pay model, and mark a separation form the original game release. It's not a great name either. But it's about what to expect from the PR team. This is that same team that releases news about loyalty rewards that generate hundreds of posts trying to clarify what the requirements for the reward are. The same team that responded to questions about removal of 6 month subs by saying it was not a popular choice, and ignored the subsequent rumors about a change in pay model which turned out to be true. The same PR team that writes about transparency and proceeds to ignore requests to clarify issues. So, no the name is not really a surprise. If I were part of ZOS management, though, I might want to talk to the PR director, as the PR team has done a poor job of making information available and promoting the game. Here's a big hint to the PR team: don't use words like 'transparency' if you don't mean it. It does not sit well with existing customers, and could hurt the ability to bring in new customers.

Something tells me this poll may be slightly skewed by the way the question is asked. :p

I voted "no" not so much because I think a change was necessary, but I do appreciate why they felt the need to do a little re-branding.

ZOS made a lot of hay about choosing and sticking with the subscription model both before and after launch. I was a key point and much ado has come of it.

After launch, a huge number of players canceled their subs (including me) and largely forgot about ESO. Many, such as myself and others I know, were waiting for something like this to come along and renew our interest. ZOS clearly wanted to reach out to these former subscribers, and rightly so.

Tamriel Unlimited isn't a minor change to the game. It's a major paradigm shift, and a way to put a positive spin on what amounts to a strategic retreat from the subscription model.

I'm sure they could have picked a better name, but product branding isn't always as easy as it may seem from the sidelines, and so far, I haven't seen a better alternative offered. ;)

P.S. For the lulz, I'll also invoke this.

Actually it was a good business move as it is essentially "ESO 2" relaunch giving the opportunity to be reviewed
again by critics under the b2p model with hopefully better results this time.

This does not mean I fully like it though.

The rebranding is the marketing department's way of trying to give people the illusion it's a different game. It's not, it's the same grind it was last year. Only it's been nerfed beyond belief and now the abilities the players used are now being nerf because heaven forbid the players gain ultimate more than once during a long boss fight.

The lack of content is very worrisome. I question this dev teams ability to make content without riddling the game with so many bugs it takes 3 weeks worth of patches for things to get fixed.

If they get fixed. How many times has a group leader lost the ability to invite people to a group? That bug has been around since beta and the devs are unable to fix it or even act like they're going to fix it. They seemed surprised it was happen when they had their meeting with guilds last week. Which tells me they're not paying attention to the tickets being submitted.

Um, no. Both those options make me think of some less flattering things customers have been saying about this game. "Tamriel Unlimited" is not a bad name. It's just different, but the move to B2P makes it a very different game.

No it doesn't make it a different game. Adding the champion points really doesn't change any of the content. It just gives the players something to do. However, for the PC players, they get to start their grind to 3600 CP without anything new to work on. There won't be any new content until after the consoles get released.

Tired of doing the same dungeons over and over every day, yet? By the time the new stuff comes it will be close to 10 months for anything new to do. 1 dungeon in Nov isn't anything to write home about. Same as the 1 dungeon we got back in June. 5 updates worth of stuff and all we have to show for it is 1 zone designed to get you from V10 to V14, plus 2 vet dungeons, DSA and 3 12-man raid and 2 of them are so easy it's an utter joke.

To be honest, I think "Unlimited" is maybe the weakest choice they could have made. It just sounds dull and very uninspired at all.

And I don't think B2P and 1.6 make ESO a different game. Just because you have no fee anymore and you deal ten times the damage than before doesn't change the game. ESO 1.0 is quite the same as ESO 1.6.

The name is cheap but it was necessary. It's very possible that the very succesful TES brand owners wanted to distance themselves from a title that basically failed and went F2P. They don't want to get their intellectual property (IP) being tarnished.

Therefore they left a relatively little IP binding "Tamriel" in the name just to keep calling TES fans to the game. This way the strong TES IP is best preserved for the next single player name whereas the MMO can go... where it wants, it's let loose to its own destiny.

It is ( probably ) for make a distinction between other MMO's that gone B2P or F2P. Because in other games ( except Rift ) you have to pay almost for everything. Or they just simply Lock You Out Content !
So those games are still got the same name but they are not the same game anymore.
Changing name to "Unlimited" on the other hand is true. They dont lock you out. You still can do whatever you want.

I do think the changes to combat are significant enough to make everyone rethink how they play, and you need to relearn everything you know about skills, gear and resource management if you want to stay competitive in PvP and effective in PvE.

However, when I said that it will be a different game, I wasn't just thinking about game mechanics. It will probably be a very different community without the subscription fee.

Sure, there is a marketing need to create an illusion of "new and improved", but I think 1.6 and B2P is enough of a change not to make it completely silly to change the name. I have seen name changes of products happen for less, like for no reason at all.

    Another round of better names.

"An Empire Divided" sounds quite good, too. Even it's similar to Star Wars "Empire Strikes Back" (like my Unleashed suggestion), but yeah.

Unlimited just describes those typical F2P MMOs and that's a bit sad.

I, as others have said, do not like the use of unlimited in the name. I realize why they did it and why those chose it, I just don't care for it. A new name was needed, I just think it could have been a better name.

Unlimited I think tries to convey there is no "pay wall" (subscription), therefore making the base game "unlimited". I do like the names suggested above, but maybe they didn't choose something like that because it would sound more like an expansion rather than the base game?

think ZOS has started printing the boxes yet? Do we have ANY chance above 0% that we can get them to change the name?

They really should have let us submit names, them select 20 or so for us to vote on. I guarantee it would have given us warm fuzzies of ownership and inclusion.

Silly as in the game is opposite what the name implies?

You can buy sections of the game but you are limited to only what you buy....you can sub the game but you are limited to only accessing while sub'ing. If you make friends in the game you are limited to remaining in the same faction and limited to only doing the same quests until you want to murder all of your own faction

OP should make a "fun" post to see how many ways we can tick off that we are LIMITED in ESO :D

I thought it was a joke at first. It reeks of a watered down, F2P game title.
