Removing lock on targets?

I have to say, I really hate the idea of locking on targets. Its really irritating how you'll be running away from something to restore health/stamina/magicka or something, and an enemy swipes and hits you from like 5 miles away. You can also do the same thing with a melee weapon, just not as drastic. Its the same thing with bows or staves, you dont even have to aim. I kinda think that takes the fun out of being a player who attacks from far away.
Before you get me wrong, I think there should be a lock on type thing for abilities, otherwise it would literally just be impossible to properly hit enemies. I just think it isnt very realistic and is very annoying how theres a lock on for light or heavy attacks, for both enemies and players.
I think I'd prefer the collision based attacking, like they had in Skyrim. How does everyone else feel about this??

Not sure I never use any lock to acquire or hold target. I play in first-person and I just aim/look at what i want to hit.

I want to say that you're doing something wrong but as the other comment goes, I don't use any lock on target stuff (in third person not first)

Now I do feel that if I attack with a bow, staff or spell that is ranged, the attack should definitely hit what I'm targeting when casting. The same should apply to any NPC.

If this is what you're referring to...I passionately do not agree.

Its not really lock on targets, its just how when you move your cursor over an NPC and it goes red, then if you light/heavy attack it no matter which way your facing you will always hit the highlighted NPC. Its just weird as it can go through corners and walls and stuff occasionally...

I do this alot as a bow user in cyrodiil, especially when my steak is amongst other steaks and tries to run or hide.

This issue does not affect me as I am always facing my target when i attack.

In third-person you are facing the direction of your camera, Not the direction you see you character facing.

I'm going to have to disagree with you.

I like being able to lock on my targets. It improves the gameplay and makes it a lot easier for me to stay focused during combat.

Are you talking about tab-targetting (where you can somehow track your target even beyond obstacles and line-of-sight) or the many versions of homing-projectiles in the game? Both can be a pain, as they defy the laws of even Tamriel physics, and that's no easy feat.

Regarding the second part, I disagree. There should be a miss factor built in. Pick up a bow for the first time in your life (level 1) and try to hit a weaving target at 30 yards with pinpoint precision.

This could easily be accounted for by passives and by having each skill level result in an improvement in your accuracy / hit zone.

Personally, I liked the feel of Morrowind and Oblivion archery. It was not a guaranteed hit and I dare say added a level of realism/skill to the line.

Granted, the character would have greater ability than I would with my keyboard, but that's where the class skill would come into play.

Some of the curve balls, let alone the absurd distance the NPC's can launch them from, does get a little tiresome.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

Have you ever played a RPG or MMORPG where this was not the case?

This isn't a first person shooter engine so that is the intended result of cast/attack on target focus.

Keep in mind if this were a FPS, the use of ranged weapons would have an almost impact after initiating a trigger. No one can realistically shoot magic but if I had a ice/fire/lightning gun those results would be almost instant as well so this is working as intended based on the game engine.

    commenting on a miss feature:
I'm doing the shooting not the player being shot at. The shooter controls the miss-near miss, not the one being shot at.

FYI: this game has a block feature that the player being attacked can use. It has a tremendous reduction to damage when used timely.

I'm not trying to be silly, condescending or rude so just in case it comes off that way, that is not the intent. I'm just being realistic that what you're asking already exists. Also, that the fact of a player being targeted is able to move behind an obstacle is not realistic but a result of the game engine. because the engine allows the targeted player to move, the engine will have projectiles "follow" the target. BUT AGAIN.. you can BLOCK which is not realistic because fire, ice and lighting do not hit like a weapon or bullet but they hit as in AOE.
