I had made a topic of this some time ago, but current ultimate generation makes it less effective than it used to be. With the 1.6 update, the healing boost from healing staves only affects healing staff spells. (That would still affect Siphon Spirit and Quick Siphon. But the overall healing would be less.) Heal staff still puts out decent numbers with the Nightblade class, largely due to their insanely high ultimate generation.
I can kind of get this to work decently with Templars with the new Radiant Destruction skill. I'm not expecting to get high end dps numbers when I use a heal staff, but I think I could probably get better numbers.

So how do you guys do it in live version and 1.6?

NB's haven't used a Resto Staff for DPS since 1.4 removed the passive damage increase. Destro Staff is the way to go for all Classes that want to do end game Magicka based DPS. Magicka DPS also lost Flawless Dawnbreaker as a passive damage increase in 1.6. As for decent numbers, you can do just fine using a Resto Staff to DPS with. NB's in particular you'd just use the old FunnelBlade build of Funnel Health (spam ability instead of Crushing Shock) + Crippling Grasp, with Entropy (Mage's Guild) tossed in for increased Spell Damage in 1.6.

Well.. It's support DPS or defensive DPS at best. I don't think anyone thinks they'll get competitive aggressive DPS numbers.
It's a shame how much this games focuses on go for broke dps.
