Can't even install ESO... any help?

Hi everyone,

Just joined these forums and really looking forward to getting stuck in to Elder Scrolls Online but I'm having an issue where I can't even install the game.

I downloaded the installer from the ESO website and then double click the installer.exe

After I select my language (english) it begins to freeze my mouse cursor, sporadically jumping from place to place before a Javascript program appears in my program tray. (as can be seen in the attached jpeg file)

<img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/5020507/uploads/FileUpload/48/3504542c0aa362125e957deb08c456.jpg" />

<img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/5020507/uploads/FileUpload/e2/f7fefd4d1d73ee756c6983eae45f67.jpg" />

Nothing happens after this point. I'm forced to Ctrl.Alt.Delete on my PC and End Task.

Please help if anyone has any suggestions. I've contacted Support but they only suggested I go into Safe Mode and remove my version of Java then reinstall which hasn't made any difference. Has anyone encountered this problem before? If so, does anyone have a solution?

Many Thanks

- Vroon

Hey there @Vroon,

It's possible that this is an issue with User Account Control, which prevents you from running executable files on your computer without express permission. It's possible that the permission dialogue is not displaying, thus preventing the installation.

Here is Microsoft's guide to disabling UAC.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/turn-user-account-control-on-off#1TC=windows-7

If you are uncomfortable with leaving this option off, please disable it temporarily, try running the ESO installer, then turn it back on.

We also noticed that you're running on Windows 8, but Microsoft's KB is specific to Windows 7. The UAC controller should be in the same place, you'll simply need to access the Control Panel using the All Apps section in the Metro Overlay. To do this, head to the Metro overlay, right click on any part of the Metro background, and select All Apps in the bottom right. Scroll to the right and you'll find the control panel there.

Hi there @ZOS_GaryA‌

I've actually tried this method too and it's still not helping but thanks very much for the suggestion. Ahh yes, thanks for pointing out I'm on Windows 8, I'd forgot to mention that.

It just seems the cursor jumps and struggles before the Java box pops up and I'm locked out of anything on my desktop. That's when I'm forced to shut down the program using task manager.

Anything else that it could possibly be?

Thanks

I found that this procedure helped
forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/144365/launcher-stuck-on-loading-without-being-on-the-main-hub#latesthttp://

Once I emptied my host file as described, everything works nicely now :)

Hi @Star_Wanderer‌

Thanks for the suggestion but seems this didn't work either in the end.

It still seems to lag the mouse out. It can get to the part to choose your language but as soon as I select English and press OK, that's when the mouse issue begins. It lags about the screen before a Java icon pops up (usually a few minutes later which is unusual considering how much of a fast machine I'm running... i7 processor, 28gb memory etc.) then once I click on the flashing Java icon it just freezes up and won't allow me to click anywhere else... it's then that i'm forced to Ctrl-Alt-Del to shut it down via task manager...

It's most frustrating.

Still can't get this to work... Does anyone know if there is a way to download the game files without having to use this java installer?

Hi Guys,

So I solved it... I searched a little more on the forum and tried this solution out. It worked a charm. I'm now installing the game... so anyone else in the future have a similar issue then just try the solution below. Thanks @dakapo33!

Hey there @Vroon,

We have an article about the Java issues, so let's see if this helps!
The launcher is a Java application. So, let's make sure you have it installed, enabled, and updated

To Enable Java

Firefox
•Open the Firefox browser or restart it, if it is already running
•From the Firefox menu, select Tools, then click the Add-ons option
•In the Add-ons Manager window, select Plugins
•Click the Java Applet Plug-in (Mac OS X) to select it
•Check that the option selected is Ask to Activate or Always Activate or on older Firefox versions, click on the Enable button (if the button says Disable, Java is already enabled)

Safari
•Click on Safari and select Preferences
•Choose the Security option
•Select Allow Plug-ins, then click on Manage Website Settings
•Click on the Java item, select an option (Ask, Allow or Allow Always) from the pulldown list when visiting other websites
•Click Done, then close the Safari Preferences window.

To Update Java:
•Launch the Java Control Panel by clicking the Java Icon under System Preferences.
•Go to the Update tab in Java Control Panel and click on the Update Now button that brings up the Installer window.
•Click on Install Update
•Once the installation is completed, the Java application will be relaunched.

If the Java application does not relaunch, manually relaunch so you can take advantage of the latest Java

If you need to reinstall Java here is how to do that:
•Download the jre-7u6-macosx-x64.dmg file here: https://java.com/en/download/
•Review and agree to the terms of the license agreement before downloading the file.
•Double-click the .dmg file to launch it
•Double-click on the package icon to launch the install Wizard
•The Install Wizard displays the Welcome to Java installation screen. Click Continue.
•On Standard Install on Macintosh HD, Click the Install button
•After the installation has completed, a confirmation screen appears. Click Close to finish the installation process.

Test Installation: To test that Java is installed and working properly on your computer, run this test applet: https://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

Pretty sad that we even have to go through these steps to install an MMO in the year 2015, but nontheless, thank you Vroon as this solved my problem as well.

On second thought, this makes an absolute mess of the file directories and seeing I'm trying to install this on an SSD with limited space, I think I'll skip the game for now and go back to the other MMO I was playing. Thanks anyhow Vroon.

So frustrating and so much fail, Zenimax. /facepalm

Call me when you guys get this issue resolved. :(

I don't think this is exactly a fault in the game installer. But rather something in the pc the person is using.
Then again a lot people use the Steam, which may change how the game is installed. Leaving the initial installer in the shadows.
• maverickmoonshineb16_ESO
I am having exactly the same issues as above, I am using windows 7, and have even doen a clean install and I still get exactly the same issue. Like Vroon I have a seperate SSD limited for space and do not wish to install the game on this drive. However without the java installer working correctly, the game will only install on the working method above directly to the default file location. Moving the file afterwards creates issues as well (I tried this method before formatting) Surely there has to be a better method of installation than this. I played this game from beta, had no issues with install at that time. It's only since it has come back unlimited that I have decided to take another look. However I am not prepared to spend anymore time (already spent many hours on this) trying to get this game to work. If anybody has any other suggestions or if the developers actually get around to fixing it, I may hopefully get to try it again some time.

Hi Guys!

Okay, after reading all of this, I had a hard time making the game install.

BUT I DID IT

Easy solution:
• After downloading the installer, restart your pc in Safe mode (with or without internet access, doesn't influence)
• Launch the installer
• The loader appears, ready for you to login
• Reboot to normal mode
• PLAY

I wanted to share this earlier with you, but my invitation to the forum took soo much time to come (2 months).

See you guys later!
