First of all, hi guys! Been reading this forums for a while now, just for the fun of it, yet I never felt the need to subscribe. This is a great community, but it has gone nuts for the last few days!
Now, since the B2P announcement, I have to say I'm concerned, and most of it has to do with the community and not ZOS. I know people don't like dramatic changes, but come on... chillax. It is good for all of us to discuss, but rage isn't doing us any favour as a community, nor as gamers.
As most of you I have some concerns myself about the B2P move. But first and foremost, I want to go with the positive opinion I made myself
after reading the announcement,
the FAQ,
watching ESO Live, and
reading the Q&A they made yesterday on Reddit. Everyone should read and watch all of that before going crazy.
- The game you've been playing until now isn't changing. The same game you've been paying monthly, is now B2P. More population for sure.
- If and only if you want to look better, play new content (DLC) or want some exp buffs, then you can subscribe or pay for what you want. Hardcore gamers want new stuff, hardcore gamers pay as always. No change at all. Yet, they make the system attractive so newcomers and previous subscribers hold on to monthly payments.
- No more gameplay changes, just some adjustements for a while. And more focus on new content. That was said yesterday, and a whole thread was open to criticise the wisest move I've heard so far.
- More revenue, and less focus on gameplay changing means they can now add the stuff you have been asking for. Or am I the only one seeing that? Plus they need to do it, as they want more money. It's an expansive move.
I know some people believe that EXP buffs make it a P2W, but I don't really think it does. Though it's there in the red line. But it's a wise move to have more subscribers and more population all in all, so yeah. If you don't like it, it's a shame. I truly believe it's not a big deal.
It is very important that we consider the option that ZOS might not try to copy any other B2P or F2P model out there, but
make their own. You know, a new strategy. It is a big team with enough resources for that. This a message to doomsday believers.
The forum has gone nuts, comparing the model with SWTOR, TLOR, Age of Conan, etc. Let the time come, let it mature. What they're trying to do is get more money, so they can also make more content IMHO. Not that bad a deal.
Now for the bad part. What's scared me the most is the following:
- Some skill lines will be DLC-based (Q&A, about the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild). ZOS_Eric answered about possible balance issues: "Adding new skills to the game is just designed to give the players more options, as opposed to more powerful options". Yeah, right. We'd like that to be true, yet there are better and worse builds, perfect balance is impossible. Furthermore, for the DLC to be attractive, the skill line should be too. Useless skill line or awesome yet P2W skill line? Those look like to only options to me. Skill lines should NEVER be part of a DLC.
- ESO: TU will be 1.6 plus shop. Then, you'll change the whole system, no VR, etc. You WILL *** off non-informed console users - a lot. It really is a bad move, and you should totally rethink it, moreover after all the concerns each change you announce generates in this forum and in the media.
- Some of the stuff promised since the beginning is now coming in DLC updates. Again, not a smart move. Those DLC should at least be free for all players before ESO:TU announcement. Remember ZOS, reputation is important, and this is the kind of things that make some people not believe in you. Plus, that would at least seem a better "gift" for the early-adopters than those ridiculous (and you know it) 100 crowns per month of subscription. Just by "paying your debts", Lannister-style
Last, but not least, to all those hardcore gamers who have been moaning these last few days, chillax. Sure, ZOS
must improve their communication, and change always sounds way too scary. But give it a try. Guess what? Without us gamers, and mostly subscribers, the game would have a lot of a bigger chance to become everything you think it might become.
If they make money, there is no need for all those scary P2W (or P2W-borderline) moves you talk about. So, if you enjoy the game, stop thinking about the future. Enjoy it while you do, pay if what you get today is just as awesome, or even more awesome, than what you got yesterday. And that's it.
Elder Scrolls needs us, and I for sure will stay. And share my opinion with respect to ZOS. Some of you seem to have forgotten they are humans too.
And that's it for my first post, enough right?
PS: Excuse me for my English. Spaniard here... oh, and please, keep the other MMO B2P/F2P models out of this thread. There are like 20,000 other threads talking about that now.
