Armor and weapon appearances tied to race?

slowpoke68
Hello all. Just bought the game and trying to pick a race for my character.

My question is this. Is this game like EQ where the armor appearance is determined by your character's race? Or is it like WoW where a particular weapon or piece of armor has a set skin no matter what race equips it?

Not sure if the different appearances are different modes of crafting.

For instance if I make a Redguard, can I still where armor with the Breton appearance, or will it always have the Redguard skin?

Thanks much!

It's not tied to race. However, you start the game only being able to craft gear in your race's style (though you can learn other styles as you progress).
    PS4 / NA
    M'asad - Khajiit Nightblade - Healer
Pakhet - Khajiit Dragonknight - Tank
Raksha - Khajiit Sorcerer - Stamina DPS
Bastet - Khajiit Templar - Healer
Leonin - Khajiit Warden - Tank

    Both.

You can innately craft in your own race's armor appearance. However, you can also find Motif books in your travels. This will allow you to craft armor in the appearance of the other races. You will just need to find the right stones to make the armor in the various racial styles.

Some found armor and weapons, and some of the higher-level set pieces that you will find will have unique appearances that cannot be changed. All found armor will be of a certain style that you can't change. So if your Redguard finds armor that is in Breton style, it will appear as Breton armor on your Redguard.

Thanks for the quick replies! I assume I could hire a pc crafter if I wanted a suit of armor made?

Also leads me to a good question. How valuable is crafting in this game?

Leaning towards playing a sword and board Templar right now.

In some games, LOTRO for instance crafting was really good and useful I thought. In others it seems like it isn't worth it and leaves you constantly poor. First character and won't have a lot of gold I am assuming.

In short...should I try to craft my own armor while leveling?

    Thanks again!

Quite valuable actually, crafted sets are pretty important, dropped sets may have better stats but they can be a pain to get (utterly random). But crafted sets you can get everytime, provided you know where the crafting station for that set is, and have the appropriate number of traits prer item unlocked.

Use your crafting to fill out your armor at low levels, and to get yourself a halfway decent set together at higher levels.

Dropped sets are better of course, and being in a good guild can help you a lot getting enough pieces together... though usually by the time you have the pieces, you have levelled past the armor and need a new set anyhow.

You will generally find enough armor pieces to keep your gear mostly current as you play through the story (and to deconstruct once you replace them), but crafting can be really helpful in the start, and if you level it properly, once again in the end to get you just the gear you want.

Don't waste any stuff raising your crafted item quality past green while levelling, the higher enhancements are generally too rare to use on gear you'll replace in five levels. Save it for the final gear tier.

As you can transfer bound gear through your bank, any set items you find you may want to hang onto in case you were to make an alt that could use them, that way any alts you make will have it easier. Though doing that will clog up your bank space rather quick, I fear (it does for me)
