So I've been gone on some army training thing for the past month, reading a lot of forum stuff, not watching any eso lives (not seeing any of my guildies, I miss you guys). Still about a week away from getting home. But this morning ("morning", I woke up at 1530), I see the forums getting blasted with crown threads, a f2p model (separate b2p?) and possibly potential upcoming p2w model (pay to win).
From what I understand, players can either play while still subscribed or play for 'free' while purchasing occasional expansions. Players will also be able to buy from a cash shop (I dreaded this day [WoW ptsd]) with either cash or rewarded shop currency earned monthly by subscribers.
Subscribers that have stuck through since the beginning have paid at least $140 (my maths might be wrong, I'm tired) in just sub pay that made it through about 3 (2?) content updates to include: vet dungeons, craglorn lower, craglorn upper (or just craglorn). That's about $47 (or $70) per content update, really pricey stuff.
Crowns are getting rewarded monthly to subscribers at 1500 per month, post shop launch. Previous subscriptions are getting a shop credit value of 100 crowns per month pre subbed. And if you had a 6 month sub before that was removed, you are getting 1500 for each extra month past shop launch (should you choose to unsubscribe[?])(are subs actually going away?).
Obviously crowns are getting a lot of hate, there has been a huge amount of threads discussing the need for subs and the problems of f2p models among other things. But the real kicker is previously subbed months being worth a petty 100 crowns past what little (and pricey) content was released.
As it stands now, pre subs are getting the shaft, possibly because ZOS feels they can't let more than 100 crowns by in order to keep a steady income. But there's no way they didn't expect an uproar (especially after the whole CP conversion debacle). The way I see it, ZOS isn't worried about losing subs and was hoping that 100 crowns would be enough to make everyone upset to then eventually increase the amount of "back pay" each month is worth at a later date and magically make everyone happy (which is probably crazy, but so is this unforseen flip in business models).
I would like to submit that the previous subs be worth the full amount of 1500 crowns per month. . . but I understand ZOS is relying on expansions for income so here is the catch that I propose -
The crowns received for previous months can only be spent towards non-expansion shop items.
This should ensure a clean handoff of game credit to players that likely would have left ESO altogether as well as a huge thank you to those of us that plan to stick around. I firmly believe it should be in ZOS's best interest to appease as many of the current player base as possible during this transition. And I (for one) would be absolutely inclined to stay, knowing my dollar is still being valued even after ZOS already has my money.
Would be terrible to jump back in game and find out my pre launch guild has desolved, that would just kill me.
Please correct anything I've got wrong
