Better racial choice for sorc ...

Beldurax
Beldurax
I am about to create my first Sorcerer, but, am stuck between High Elf and Breton as my racial choice. Which of these is the better choice for this class ? Or, perhaps is there a better one ?

Thanks !

Depends, how are you building your Sorcerer? If Stamina, perhaps Redguard? If tank, perhaps Imperial?

Really, any race can do anything and unless you are a die hard min-maxer i'd recommend pick the race that jives with your inner self the most!

Breton and High Elf have the better base for a pure caster, but you don't play a pure role in this game, at least not exclusively.

So, any race can really be good, so pick the one you like.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Altmer, like all other races of tamriel, exist solely at the whim of khajiit so that they may pet us, feed us, and provide as scratching posts.

The other races are not quite as good for Sorceror IMO, but Altmer (High Elf) and Breton are equally as good.

Dunmer also have a boost to magicka, and a resistance to fire damage, but to make them equal to Altmer/Breton you need to focus on Fire Staffs, or at least weapons with fire enchantments.

But as others have said you can play any race as a sorc and get good results, especially if you are role playing rather than min-maxing. I wouldn't look down upon any race for Sorceror, they might not have the boost to magicka, but they will have something that Altmer/Bretons lack.

Thank you for reminding me of this. This show was on during my anti cable days. From 1989 to 2005 I had no Cable TV to speak of, other than a few years of basic cable provided by an apartment building. But I did see a few episodes of it at a friends house and enjoyed it. Since it is available on Amazon Prime, I am going to pick up and start watching it now.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

If you're planning on running a magicka DPS build on your sorcerer using a destruction staff, altmer is the best race to choose. This is because your main attack from destruction staff will be crushing shock, which deals ice, fire and shock damage all at once. Altmers' final racial passive give them a 4% damage boost to ice, fire and shock damage effects.

    TL;DR: Altmer master race

The Altmer passive doesn't increase the direct damage of crushing shock. It only increase the damage of the proc effects of crushing shock (i.e., the burning). Since the burning effect is rather insignificant, the benefits of the Altmer passive on crushing shock is minimal, probably not even a 0.5% increase in dps from crushing shock.

The ice and lightning attacks of crushing have no proc effects that deal damage. So the Altmer passive has no effect on the lightning and ice portion of crushing shock. However, if you're using an ice/lightning staff, the Altmer passive is still good for the elemental ring DOT.

Wrong. I have tested it with all Sorc skills, it does increase the direct damage of Mage's fury and all the other lighnting spells and it also does increase each destruction staff skill.

Not sure about the fire DoT though. And it would not make sense, since shock and frost can't cause any damage DoT's. The tooltip is misleading, as it sais 'Increase damage of elemental effects' But this goes for all direct elemental damage and for sure fire DoT's as well.

No, read the description on the passive again. It increase the damage of elemental "effects". "Effect" includes only proc' effects and DOTs. It does not include the base damage of the attack.

The passive increases the explosion of Mage's fury, but not the base attack of Mage's fury. This is because the explosion is a proc effect, and as I mentioned, the passive only increases the proc effect and not the base attack. So during the execute phase, Altmers will have about 4% higher dps than other races.

The passive does not increase the base damage of crushing shock. It only increases the damage of the burning proc effect from crushing shock.

Yes my friend, it DOES increase the direct damage of EACH elemental attack, not only the Damage over time effect, which can only occur to fire and would make the Passive rather pointless. And not only procs.

Why don't you just install a damage meter and test it yourself O.o

If you plan on using staff abilities a lot a high elf might be better. If you want a little more survivability a breton might be better. Personally I went with a breton.

These of course are for pure caster roles.
Imperial can pretty much do every class and role very well.
