Pet sound effects bugged? Why is my Dwemer Spider so quiet?

Just got this, realised I'd missed it back in April due to the bugged out quest. My question is what happened to the sound effects it used to make?
I understand that some people were pissed off with the clanking etc, but I thought it was a cool effect. Surely the fix was a little more intelligent than just "wipe it for everyone across the board"?
A toggle for pet sound effects in the settings menu would've been a better solution surely?
