Launcher updating?

My launcher is giving me problems (again!!!) When I open it, it says it is updating (not the game, but the launcher itself), and then it appears to get stuck. Even after leaving it for 2 hours, it is still in exactly the same position, and does not have the usual menu options and there is no way to close it down, other than to use the Task Manager. Doing it this way, I get a message saying it's not working properly and Windows will look for a solution blah blah.

Was it supposed to update? Any idea how to fix this, because I obviously cannot play now

It did have a small update, because now it shows if the server is online or offline. I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions on fixing it, though.

As for fixing your problem all I can think of is maybe try running the launcher as admin (right click the shortcut, run as admin).

Thanks for the replies! If it has actually updated, I will leave it a bit longer (my internet connection is horrific right now!). Just knowing it wasn't some random error makes me feel better
