Is there some sort of unwritten rule wrt crafting....

..that crafters have to have all the mats themselves??
Reason I ask is that on a couple of occasions I've made the offer to craft armour/weapons of a specific type/set for people that have requested it in chat, provided that they supply me with the crafting materials, or at least pay an amount of gold that equals the cost of getting the needed mats. In both cases I've gotten responses of the type "if I must gather the mats for you I might as well craft it myself!"

is this really the norm in the game? I'd think it'd just be reasonable to get something in return when crafting a weapon/set of armour for somebody?

I think that crafters have become some sort of estranged sub-group in ESO. Neither other players nor @ZOS cares about them now.
I haven't been to a world set crafting station in more than 2 weeks.

No, it isn't. Don't craft for them, if they demand it to be free. Those are probably the same buggers complaining about the soul-gem-cost of resurrection. Parasites...

    Some comments:
-I often see people offering $1k a piece of crafted-item X (or some such price, more or less). At that rate, I'd expect to use my own mats.
-People looking for free/cheap, should not expect the crafter to have the materials, especially if they're asking for a specific set (not a single item for research).
-In all the guilds that I am in, guild mates craft items for free, provided the materials are available one way or another (the requester has them, or the crafter has extras).

I craft armor sets and weapons for players with my own materials, for a fee of course. I usually craft research pieces for free or minimal cost, Nirnhoned being the exception. The only thing I require someone to provide is a Kuta if they want a legendary glyph.

Honestly, it just depends. If someone wants something that I can craft quickly and easily, and I have a bunch of mats, I just do it for them. Good Karma and all that.

If it's a full set of something and it requires something other than base materials, I usually ask - or don't respond unless they say they're providing mats.

But these are guild requests. I rarely respond to zone requests because I'm usually doing something and stopping to craft a full set of Death's Wind or whatever is kind of a pain. One thing I'm counting on is there are so many crafters in the world.

And that might be the heart of your problem. Crafting really isn't that hard, nor is it hard to level up. There certainly is no shortage of people doing it. Many of them are doing it for free, the experience, whatever. So when you get a response like that, either ignore it or encourage them to develop their own crafting skills. It's really not that hard. :)

Well if they can craft it themselves, why are they asking for someone else to craft it for them? - They don't have the mats so they are too lazy to get them and too cheap to buy them. I would charge them the cost of the mats plus an additional fee for doing it.

If you are crafting for free, they should expect to provide you with the mats at least. It's your choice to tell them no if you have stacks of whatever you need.

This, if your crafting for free --- OH yea - they provide the mats!

You don't mention which chat these transactions start in. I admit I've never had the experience described here. I craft things for people all the time. I never charge if they provide the mats, and sometimes not even when using my own mats. I get things made for me a few times per month, and always have my payment offers declined. More than once I've had people decline my mats "dont worry about it, I have plenty" and the like.

These transactions always take place between guildmembers, never in /z. I wouldn't ask or respond to a customized item request to the heathens in the open world. Elitist maybe, but it may account for the differences in our experiences. Or maybe my guildies are just stellar biengs.

yes, for guildmates it'd be something else. Usually, at least in most of the guilds I'm in, there's a fair amount of stacks of various mats in the guild bank, available for anyone.

Yeah, zone chat. As I said, in a guild it is different, most guilds tend to have stacks of mats in their guild bank for anyone to use anyway, so crafters would rarely have to use their own mats.
I agree about needing a particular item for researching just one trait - the amount of mats for that is fairly small anyway. And often the other person might have a trait I'm lacking, so he'll craft an item with that trait for me, in return.

Time is money. Time to gather the mats, time to get to the crafting station, time to make the gear, time to research the traits, time/expense to send it out COD.

Now, if someone wants to save me time in any of those areas then the price is adjusted or even gratis if they are giving me the mats and showing up at the crafting station for a face to face trade. Guildmates get a better deal, but that is because we trade things back and forth.

Otherwise, they can just go do it themselves if they don't want to pay for my time.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Considering that crafting is limited on what you can make, and the desirable vet items are available only in drops or trials, demand is low unless you are a new player. I'm not talking about alts & new toons since most of us have that vet toon that can make anything for them and you have a player bank to access. I find it odd that you can max out in all of the crafting skills and you are still severely limited on what you can and can't make. I think the operative words here are "max out". Perhaps if we couldn't "max out" we could build more items and, thus, increase the supply. In doing so, crafters become much more in demand if they can actually make it. I know abuse would be the risk which is why it would have to take A LOT (either skill or mats) to actually craft specialty items, but since there really isn't a supply in this case, there really isn't a demand for specialty crafters.

Here's an example - my VR9 DK still uses a VR6 Pact bow because of the special abilities it has. The range buff stacks with the other range buffs I have and in PvP it has helped me greatly, so I haven't replaced it yet. Even though I'm maxed out in woodworking, I can't make a Pact Bow. Or a new Pact Shield that is VR5 still even though I'm a member of the EP and I'm maxed out on the skill. I still maintain that deconstruction is poorly utilized since it is ONLY used as a mat source when it could also be used as a back-engineering method as well as a way to learn motifs. Again, it does't have to be easy to make or get, but not getting anything out of deconstruction other than materials is a waste in my opinion.
