Detailed info on lag in EU PvE (no comments about PvP please)

There has been a lot of confusion lately in threads regarding lag where it's been understandably hard for ZOS to understand what's actually going on - which only leads to the standard reply of "we are looking at lag in cyrodiil". In an effort to make clear to them (you, if you're reading this) I wanted to share some examples of how the server lag works.

As a background, some connection info. I have also played on a number of connections, and this seem to be completely unrelated to what connection you are on.

Case 1: Zone lag

If you are DC on EU and ever visited Glenumbra or Stormhaven at prime time you will know this one. You walk around doing your thing and all of a sudden everyone around you just stop and stand there frozen. First you wonder if they are all pranking you.. and then you see the latency meter hit at least 350, often 999+. You walk up to an NPC, hit E - nothing will happen. A little while later the server catches up and everyone just teleports around.

Case 2: Mismatches between client and server

This one is a lot more subtle, but is a real issue in serious endgame content such as Sanctum Ophidia. It's basically what the title says, that there will be a bigger discrepancy between what you see and what the server holds as the "truth" than what is needed for you to stay alive.

One example that stands out is the Orb phase on the Serpent, here you run for a bunch of Orbs that will give you a shield to protect you from an attack that will otherwise one shot you. Only one player can pick up an orb. I noticed several times here that if people aim for the same orb, it is very likely that they will both (on their screen) see that they picked it up and are safe. Then it explodes and it turns out one of the players, who sees himself as having the orb, didn't have it. There is also the case where you run a bit past the orb, you see that you picked it up, but if you don't stay in the position of the orb the server might again not register that you have picked it up.

It is also a problem that tanks might recognize, I'm not 100% sure on this one but I believe that most of the issues where you are "out but not out" of something is because the server is not completely up to date on where you are - and still believes you are inside whatever red area. This leads to a situation where you have to be out of the attacks half a second before you would expect that you need to be out, if that makes any sense. Most have probably gotten used to this by now, but it's still quite annoying to see yourself being outside the Serpents Image cone .. only to still get clipped by it and wipe your team.

The problem is that mostly everyone is now actively trying to work around these issues, but it is really making playing less fun because it's an unpredictable element completely outside of your own control. Sometimes it will play nice with you, sometimes it won't.

Feel free to add to this if you have any comments. And to make it extremely clear in case this is specific to the EU megaserver, I am on the EU megaserver!

If you are on NA and don't recognize this lag, please don't comment. If you are on EU and don't recognize this at all, feel free to comment and please include whether you have been in SO or not because I believe the second issue is not quite as apparent outside "quick one-shot content".

Also please spare this thread from comments about PvP and Cyrodiil as they have already stated they are aware of this. I want this thread to be helpful to ZOS about the PvE lag exclusively.

Thank you.
