After a painful download time, i'm starting the game soonish. Is there anything i should know?
What class should i go for, what race etc.
I played beta but didn't follow up, and i'm just giving it a try now!

It really depends on what you want to do. Any race can be any class and perform any role, so it really comes down to what you'd like to do.

It depends on which faction you want to play, since races are faction bound (unless you have the explorer's pack (pre-order)).

If you are doing Ebonheart Pact, then Dunmer (Dark elves) have good passives for Dragonknights. Argonians have good passives for Nightblades (and some say Templars) and which leaves Nords for Templars. Dunmer also have some magicka passives for Sorcs.

If you are playing Aldmeri Dominion, Altmer (high elves) have good magicka passives, so are good for Sorcs and Templars. Khajiit have good Passives for Nightblades (although mine is a Templar) and in my opinion so do Bosmer (wood elves). Dragonknights could come from any of those races, and I'm sure plenty of people have preferences.

If you are playing Daggerfall Covenent, Bretons have good Magicka so make good Sorcs (and templars due to Templar magicka issues). I'm not sure what people prefer to play Redguards or Orcs as. But I have an Orc Nightblade and I'm loving it.
People believe what they either want to be true or what they are afraid is true!

Yeah, it really depends on your playstyle.

What did you enjoy doing during the beta?

Are you a stealthy hit-them-before-they-know-it type? Nightblade would be a good class.

Are you a run-to-group-and-bash-them? Dragonknight or Templar, or even Sorc.

Are you more of a strategic player? Any class has good points and you have access to several skill lines regardles of your class/race.

Apart from that: Do you enjoy crafting? There are now crafting writs that you can do to help level your crafting (though leapfrogging with another player is still the best way).

What server are you going to be on? Do you have a preference of faction?

Welcome back and enjoy the game!

As the above commenter said, it depends. I would ammend the "any class can perform any role" bit with saying that as the game stands now, templar dps is hurting, and dk's aren't really respected as healers (not saying that it can't be done, but you will probably have a tough time finding groups).

However, if you are looking at creating a main for the long haul, I wouldn't worry too much about how things are right now. Balance in any MMO is an unending process, and this month's OP could be next month's nerf target. And with the upcoming champion system, creating a new "main" will be very quick if you end up deciding you want to try something different. All of your post-50 characters are going to share a single XP pool, so all you will have to do (besides gearing of course, but crafting makes that almost a non-issue) is level the new character to 50 and xp wise it will be caught up to your main. The 3-50 leveling is a breeze (to give you an idea, on my first character, taking the time to enjoy the quests and zones, it took me 3 weeks while working a 60+ hour a week job).

I'd suggest creating 1 of each class and just play around with them a bit. Find which one you have the most fun with, and there you go. You've got your main.

You know very well it doesn't really work this way in a game where all class skills cost magicka and everyone can be a mage. ;)

Anyway, it's true that each race has passives suited for a particular build, but they are not significant enough to make unusual combinations ineffective. I'm doing just fine as a non-stealthy Bosmer dragonknight despite not having any really useful passives except minor stamina bonus.

Yeah, I wasn't suggesting you can't do any race for any combination, I was just suggest some good combinations for the OP to start with.

I know. :) It's just that races with magicka passives are great for any class unless you specifically want to make a stamina build (that's where Redguards shine, btw. Mine's a melee nightblade.)

Oh, there's something important though. Dunmer have innate fire resistance, which helps vampires and Bosmer and Argonians have poison resistance, good for werewolves.

"Here in his shrine, that they have forgotten. Here do we toil, that we might remember. By night we reclaim, what by day was stolen. Far from ourselves, he grows ever near to us. Our eyes once were blinded, now through him do we see. Our hands once were idle, now through them does he speak. The four classes are sort of supposed to act as a base template for your play style:

    Dragonknight: Knight
    Templar: Healer
    Sorcerer: Mage
    Nightblade: Rouge

But that is only a gross simplification, with the amount of weapon/armor types available to you regardless of your class choice, one could theoretically play as any position they want, and can be as pure or hybrid in role as they see fit. We have dragonknight healers, nightblade tanks and sorcerer battlemages.

Racial passives were intended to be made in such a way that they are almost 'inconsequential' if you choose to ignore them, but can give you a few always-present passive effects if you so desire, so there is a medium-to-low concern over race due to passives. But still, some races are more 'attuned' to certain play styles than others. For example, nords are almost always ideal for some sort of two-handed tank--thus making nords a high candidate for a dragonknight by association. But it would be totally acceptable for one to have an altmer dragonknight.

Go Here read up. There should be lots of advice on how to play. Frankly, if we answer your question with detail the thread will likely be moved there ;)

Edit# That's what happened the last two times there was any detailed responses. Looking at that forum area though, getting reasonable detail is like looking for a needle in a haystack. So, when you start look at all of your character skill-lines and hover the cursor over the experience bar underneath the skill-lines title to get a tooltip telling you how to level up the skills. Go to a help site "TESO wiki" or UESP for information on the morphs, some of them are awesome for certain classes. Join the Fighters Guild get "Silver Bolts" asap. There are a number of things new players expect which have not been introduced into the game yet. Look at your controls and consider how to make them more useful to you. Learn to "interrupt" whenever opponents look to be doing something "special".
