PvP for a newbie

I've been playing ESO since day one (now VR11) but have been doing so purely as a PvE player working through the storylines (coming to the end of Cadwell's Gold).

I've neglected PvP and quite fancy giving this a go; is that anywhere I can cut my PvP teeth and get some experience or is it just a case of diving into Cyrodiil and seeing what happens?
I am one of The Great Mediocracy, those whose role in life is to provide the baseline by which The Few deem themselves Great.

Jump in. Find a group that's looking for members and follow them. The best way to learn is by observing what others do, and their use of tactics.
    Have fun.

Yup, basically what the above have said. Just join a pug group and learn from them. Slowly overtime you'll start to understand the fundamentals that is Cyrodiil.

If you aren't veteran, you will be massacred by any Vet player you meet. If you go to Thornblade, which is the busy Campaign (both NA and EU) this is likely to happen. You might want to consider joining the non-vet campaign where at least the players will be fightable although the npcs are still high vet level and a real problem for low level players.

Do the Tutorial quest when you first go - well worth it since it shows you how to use siege weapons and you get 2 skill points out of it.

Lvl determines your roll in the battle, I think.

At lower lvls, stick to the walls and siege equipment, you won't be on the front lines until you and your gear can stand toe to toe with the enemy. Till then hang back and be a pocket healer for someone, or use ranged attacks.

Always travel in a group. Always have a quick heal handy. Always have a good time.
