Experience loss following patch 1.5.3

I've not been paying too much attention to all the discussion about VP/XP but I've just fired up the game following the EU Megaserver patch to 1.5.3. Prior to the patch my experience bar (VR10) was about 75% full; post patch it's much smaller at about 20%. Is this meant to happen as I wasn't that far off VR11 but now that's not the case?
