What's the incentive to do Crafting Writs?

Cazic

I'd rather save my mats for crafting useful gear.

Or is the idea to only focus on doing writs once you've got all your important crafting out of the way?

The rewards I've seen so far just aren't that great so it seems like a waste to use mats for writs, when I could be saving them up for my next set of armor.

I've only done a couple so I could be missing something. How's everyone else finding the writs so far?

Apparently they upped the amount of gold given in this patch.. but we will have to see if it has made them worth it or not.

You can find nirncrux using crafting surveys which you occasionally get as reward. Also, I currently get like a stack of mats of each kind just by picking all the white-green trash that drops in dungeons(doing pledges and sometimes redoing them to help friends) and deconstructing it, so the mats dump for me is perfectly fine - actually helps me keep my bag in check and spares the trouble of having to sell/vendor extra mats.

I haven't done enough writs to be certain yet, but even if it's some gold and a chance at nirncrux, that's good enough for me. If you actually need the mats you have for something useful, might as well skip a few writs/not do them at all. I constantly had excessive stacks of mats of all kinds even while leveling though.

Also, surveys lead you to big clusters of rich nodes(like 7 rough mats per node instead of usual 3), so if you get one, you'll more than replenish the mats you spent(plus, raw mats to refine). Not too sure how often surveys drop though, I've gotten 1 of each kind so far.

From what I can see, the Inspiration you get is a nice boost to leveling your crafter. And, since we get so little points for making something, the mats you use up actually give you more inspiration if your leveling your character. If you look at it that way, its a great way to level your crafter.

However, if your at L50 in Crafting, then the rewards are not worth the mats you use to do the writs, it is a net loss to do the writ. I have stopped doing the writs because I am not giving the game materials in order to do some quests.

Being able to do 1 writ in 20 hrs does not give you that much inspiration to level your craft. Now if you was able to do 1 writ per hour, then your talking about the inspiration being worthwhile.

There is no reason to do them at all. All craft skills level up fast anyway and you get no real reward from doing them.

I did 9 and never ever got anything than common white gear or common craft materials in return about 1/30 of what you spend doing them.

Its just a way to drain materials and potential money gains out of the system. Don't fall for the ruse.

Personally, at cap, the only one worth doing is the Provisioning Writ. This is because there is a chance to get both Tier 3 Mats (Those you have to buy from a Grocer) and the recipes that drop (including the chance to get a purple one).

At level cap it is extremely cost prohibitive to do the Armor/Weapons Writs.

The amount you spend crafting the items will never be compensated by what you get in return.

Even IF you get a survey and you manage to get 4-7 Nirncrux out of it, if you add up the cost of creating all of the items each day that you didn't get a survey, and compare it to how much you can get by selling the Nirncrux, you are better off just buying the Nirncrux on the open market (zone chat).

You will probably make more gold by farming the Voidsteel, Voidcloth, and Nightwood and selling to others who are trying to do the writs than you would doing the writs yourself and hoping to get a survey.

Making level 50 in any crafting skill except enchanter is fairly quick, in my opinion. For the writs to be really something to seek out on a daily basis, aside from the reward pack you get it would be a nice add for the inspiration to go into something worthwhile like:
    • Escrow account to be applied to any future game change in crafting level cap.
    • Conversion into quality improvement items, like 2000 inspiration for 5 Epic Tempers, etc.
    • Conversion into Motif.
    • Conversion into a set of building materials to be used for building the yet-to-be-released player housing.
    • You get the idea

I have not done the writs on the live server yet, but on the PTS, I found that the only real reward you get for the gear writs is inspiration to level the skill. The consumable writs on the other hand are worth doing, as the surveys they can provide lead to spots with lots of mats. I was only able to do the alchemy and enchanting ones, but the alchemy one sent me to a place with 6-7 plants that gave double drops, and the enchanting one sent me to an area with about a dozen runestones that each gave 2 stones. Sadly, I was only vet 2, and the area in question was a wasp colony in craglorn. As such, I wasn't able to get all of them, even with the help of a kind adventurer. However, I did still come away with several colored aspect runes, which, when one considers it is a daily thing, that only requires one glyph to be made and a runestone to be found, is definitely worth it.

And, those writs do not seem to ask for a lot of Mats. In the two I have done, I have had to make one Glyph and provide one Rune. So, they are great in that regard, and the Inspiration from them is nice.

If only the Surveys did not send you to a place that is surrounded by VR11 Wasps.....

On my main, all crafting skills are maxed, so I did all the crafting writs once (except for alchemy, the Nirnroot doesn't count for some reason when you acquire them). I only got the usual trash rewards, except for 1 survey (and 1 on another character).

But, as nice as Nirncrux seems to be for many players, what am I supposed to do with it as a single player who never even get to research these items in the first place in order to craft them? I guess I'll just store them in the inventory from my material-alt until one of my friends might want to use it...
I had to use 1 whole stack (-1, it was 99) of Void Ingots just to get a few more ores and 3 Nirncrux of 2 different kinds (altogether!).

As long as no one confirms to get tomatoes and oats for Provisioning, I'm out.

I've done most of the (working) writs everyday. I stopped doing wood and cloth since there seemed little chance at nirncrux. I've only gotten 3 surveys, the most recent being BS. It was the one next to wasps, which I was able to kill, with a little luck. That one yielded 5 nirnhoned mats. Overall, only provisioning seems worthwhile, since it takes few mats to complete the writ, and even without a survey, I'm still getting pretty good mats in return, much better than those required to complete writ. As far as the smithing writs, I'm on the fence with the cost vs. the return. I did, finally, get as much nirnhoned in one whack as in all the farming I have done prior to this. I am using a lot of refined mats, but since I'm still chasing Master Refiner achievement, I have plenty of mats to use. In general, the writs have lead to a rise in refined mat prices, which is good because the Master Refiner depressed the hell out of mat prices. So sell your mats for a sure gold return, or use them for a better chance at nirncrux. Truth is I don't need the gold, and really have little need of nirncrux since I don't think that trait is all that good compared to others.

Does completing crafting writs not give you achievements? Like for more dyes? I haven't looked into it but I thought this would be one reason to complete writs. Although other than that you're absolutely right. Rewards for these are not great.

    I have to add something:
I got more XP (level XP!) for completing one writ than for soloing a Vet Dolmen.. just saying.
At least to me, this is the only thing that makes it worthwhile, if at all.

    There are achievements.

You get one for doing each writ (Jack of all trades?)
You get one for turning in numbers. (10, 25, etc.)

IIRC (unable to log in for patch downtime) at least one of the above does provide a new dye when completed.

Not arguing the general point, but what stops you from researching items?o.O
Also, nirncrux sells for some pretty nice sums...though I suppose it might've changed now, unsure. I used mine to get a few researches going because why not.

I'd love to research them, but I couldn't get my hands on these items yet. As a single player (I'd say, 99% of my ESO time), I can't run UC dungeons to get those. At least I've heard we only can get them there.

I can take the same amount of required refined mats and make armor/weapon items on my main player, give them to my alt and have them decon them... he/she gets more xp into that craft in seconds doing this than these worthless writ quests... I have done these every day since the patch and have yet to get anything worthwhile from these. No advanced mats, nothing. The XP into the skill is nominal at best. I have done this almost every day since the patch on three players on my account. It takes most of my playing time to get through all 18 (15 with bugged alchemy writs), and I haven't had time to do much of anything else. So 10 days of this has been a huge waste of time. I went through all the refined mats I had stored. I will not be buying mats to complete these quests going forward because the reward is so BAD. It is a huge time sink for nadda, 0, zeeeerrrroooo, waste time!!!!

at first i thought it was a waste of time and materials too- but I've found that writs and refining are still the most consistent means of attaining gold tempers and rosins, kuta, etc. outside of buying them.
i have 2 crafters who do it - and in a week i get on average about 4-8 gold tempers so in a week I'm able to gold out one item. it dosent work out financially at first- but over the long haul if u have say 6 crafters its quite profitable. i do it each morning, takes about 20 minutes and i find it kind of fun. at first the drops are crap it seems, but once u get a gold temper of a craglorn survey- with a chance to get nirn stuff- it makes it worthwhile. i get about 2.5k back from each completed crafting day for each crafter- who do about 4 writs each. the gold tempers go for 5k at least- so its fine with me.

then again- if u loot everything in a dungeon , u ll make about 2-4k and that takes about 20 minutes so perhaps thats a better means of making gold. i dunno- but i find it relaxing and a nice way to start my day in tamriel.

Crafting writs are more usefull now than before, from a point of view of someone who does not craft gear for "living". I get much more gold tempers from reward chests than by refining for some reason. I find this stupid af.
