Why are the armour textures [Actually mean meshes, not textures!] so bad in this game?

I'm fairly new to this game and this is one major thing I don't really understand. The environments, monsters, spell effects, in fact, nearly everything apart from armour textures, look amazing.

Are ZOS ever looking to improve armour textures at all?

atm when I equip some supposedly big metal gloves they just level completely with the thin robe I'm wearing and it looks awful. Even vanilla WoW had better glove textures than this.

Armours are kept simple to improve performance in large scale PvP.

Yes also if if you have litle ram on your graphic card its pretty funny how the texture get better after time as it loads the high quality textures, easy to see in populated towns.

Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

That's weird, I don't know whether it's because I'm using SweetFX but the armor/clothing detail of my character, other players' characters and NPCs look amazing. Isn't there a way to fix bad armor textures? In the Usersettings.txt file (usually located in documents/Elder Scrolls Online/live/), find the line SET MIP_LOAD_SKIP_LEVELS and set it to: SET MIP_LOAD_SKIP_LEVELS "-3". Works for me at least...

Looks amazing for me too but it takes some time to load if you play in Ultra and look at someone for a couple of secs, their armor will load for you and you'll see it's amazing.

    Huh?

The armor in this game looks better than most RPG's, let alone MMOs.

I've got to say that I really like the armor in this game because it looks, well, a bit more realistic. Most racial styles of armor in this game actually look like they could be worn in battle without stabbing yourself on some spike or something and kill yourself. Yes, they are kind of painted-on and line up with your skin, but the armors themselves look really good.

I dunno about the textures being bad because they are fairly decent. I think its the meshes (basically the shape of the armor) that are lacking. 90% of the armors have the same butt flap and leg plates model which I think there needs to be more variations in armor to make each racial motif/any motif look different and unique.

If you want pink armor and red sword you are on the wrong game =) To be more serious, i guess you don't play in ultra because they are good enought, better than a lot of MMO.

The armor textures are very good in this game. They don't look the best at low levels, necessarily, but they do get better looking as you progress.

Oh I think I got confused then. I don't mean armour textures I mean armour meshes. I don't play on ultra but I have textures on high. Are the meshes still completely flat on ultra?

I already corrected myself in saying that the meshes are pretty bad, not the textures, and his pictures prove my point. You can't see it so much with the heavy armour but if you look at the light armour you can see that the whole middle part is completely flat and the robe and belt across his chest are just drawn on.

That is what I was saying is bad. The character I'm levelling atm has heavy armour gloves and a light armour chest and both are just completely flat and level with each other as they are just the textures painted onto his skin. When you say you are wearing heavy armour I don't think you're referring to painting your skin a more metallic colour. You are wearing thicker armour than light armour and that should show up in-game.

Don't ***-post in my thread with broken english if you can't even be arsed to read the comments.

Can you post some examples @EarthpacShakur‌ ?

It's pretty easy to take screenshots in the game and you can just upload them to Photobucket to post them on here.

So. I went ahead and pulled an example of what he might be talking about

    FlatMesh_zps7dd17b2e.png

The details of the texture looks all flat with the texture. The leather band, the metal ring, the teeth at the waist, the rivets on the chest leather band, the loose cloth at the neck... it's all just flattened together. Rotating around the character makes it even more apparent.

Is that what you're talking about @EarthpacShakur‌? I've never really looked so closely and I think it would be cool if they added an option for more advanced meshes in the future for those of us with beastly rigs. I don't see why they couldn't have all the processing for that done client-side.

Because processing meshes/textures entirely on the client's side opens the game up to a lot of hacks.

Would the hacks have any effect on the server side of the game? wouldn't all the hacks be localized to the computer & game they are loaded on?

If all textures/meshes were clientside, then I could have see-through walls, highlighted armor for specific types of characters, overly large resource nodes, etc.

The ability to change the way that textures and meshes display on the client's end could provide huge (and unfair) advantages to less scrupulous players.

I know exactly what he's talking about. The meshes(i guess that's what they're called) can look a little painted on sometimes but, far from bad for an mmo. Seems to be worse on light armor. But, MMO wise, ESO's total graphic package is the best I've seen.

lol. Makes complete sense. I'm not that devious to even consider doing such things. I guess the dishonorable among us would pull such stunts.

Thanks for the clarification and explanation though.

I would THINK if anything were set to client-side processing it would be things like meshes and lighting effects... things that don't really have an impact on gameplay but like you pointed out, even those could be exploited... so it's best to leave it server side.

If I remember correctly, back in Wrath of the Lich King, there were these little shards of ice that you could collect that gave a ton of reputation for a specific faction. They were small and hard to spot, but there was a client-side hack you could do that replaced them with a huge, obnoxious mesh to spot them easily.

What Graphics card are you using and what are your game's graphics settings? Nobody can really say much about what your seeing without knowing if you in Ultra-High, medium or dirt poor low settings....

Ah... There's the problem. Yes, they look much better in Ultra because of the displacement being used at the higher levels. Low levels ignore the displacement maps that add the details.

Given between the choice of having great textures or great meshes for load considerations, give me great textures first, then allow me to upgrade the meshes level or keep it low. However, it should be noted that the time invested to create several sets of meshes increases production time, so there's that.
