XP gain questions

Just managed to hit VR1 and headed to the Vet areas + Crag. I wanted to gain XP on weapon skill lines (and class skills for that matter) I haven't played with yet, so that if I ever wanted to swap my build I could. So here's the deal: level 1-50 I've rolled with a dual wield and a bow (since then I've maxed the experience on those two to 50). Now I swap those two out for a restoration staff and a two-hander and go about my adventuring.

Naturally I thought that because I was fighting high-leveled Vet enemies, the first 1-20 levels on these two weapons would jump in leaps. Unfortunately it did not - it went pretty slowly. I also slotted new skills, such as the mages guild "mage/inner light". I thought this would go up from rank I to rank IV especially quick too, but surprisingly it hasn't moved.

Which begs the question: how does XP gain work? Do guild skills only gain xp if I do stuff relating to that guild (mages guild = lore books etc.)? Does weapon skill lines take about as long to level up as my actual character level?

Skill XP will progress at vet levels as they did pre vet. But they seem to take longer at higher ranks or after morph (anecdotal observation.) There is no correlation between skill XP and level XP, when you get to vet ranks.

I started tracking skill XP with Combat Log Statistics (CLS.) esoui.com/downloads/info23-CombatLogStatisticsCLS.html

Enemies and quests in VR levels will give a certain amount of Veteran XP and a smaller amount of normal XP. VXP only goes towards leveling you up in vet ranks. The normal XP goes towards leveling skills and abilities. As such, you can level skills up during veteran ranks, but it won't be as fast.

If you want to level skills up quickly, you're better off going back to Coldharbour and killing enemies there, since they give you their full amount of normal XP no matter what Vet Rank you are.

Also, while you need to do various things to gain levels in the Mages' Guild, Fighter's Guild, and Undaunted, once you have the skills unlocked, they gain XP just like any other skill on your bar.

    Just to add to this
Fighter's Guild levels (not skill) is from killing undead and daedra
Mage Guild Levels from lore books
Werewolf skill line levels from kills in werewolf form
    Undaunted levels from dungeon achievements
All others level from having a skill loaded on your bar and leveling the skill from normal exp.

Armor skill lines also level from normal exp but based on number of armor of that type currently worn.

Every single skill in game has a different amount of exp needed per level. That's why the first skill on a new line can level with a single kill but the last skill needs tons. There are some nice add-on which list exactly how much each skill needs before it levels next.

There are also some penalties to the amount of points gained in Craglorn at least for Vet Points if you are under leveled.I am not sure that it applies to normal XP but you gain something like ~50% VP if under Vet4, and 75% if under Vet8(very rough approximations form my memory ). The best way to level skills early is doing fast quests and loading the skills when you turn them in. After a point AOE grinding lvl50 daedra or zombies works great. Crag is good for skill leveling if you can clear Spell Scar fast.

This^. Zombies by Vile Laboratory in Coldharbour level skills and weapons and armor very well. Doing stuff in VR gives you rather mediocre XP because I think some of what would have been XP gets rerouted into VP, which levels Vet Ranks but not skills or weapons or armors.
