What app are you using to video capture?

jkirchner71ub17_ESO2
With all these "celebrity" PvP videos out there I'm curious as to what software / application the players are using today to capture video in ESO. Too often I am finding myself wishing I had captured something on video from Cyrodiil and not being prepared to do so. Seeing four DKs "Take Flight" in a row onto the walls at Fare from a large rock outside the keep was epic even if I was on the defending side - reminded me of the Battle of Helm's Deep. Or being feared by a NB when my Unstoppable just ran out and ending up in the river below Alessia Bridge being munched on by slaughterfish - nearly pissed myself laughing, thanks Az for this memory back when I was just gaining some confidence in my PvP gameplay . Even some memorable 1v1 fights with amazing players from DC and EP we were fortunate enough to have finished before others arrived to spoil the fun.

Back when I played LoTRO or DDO we used FRAPS but I'm guessing this is definitely obsolete in this day and age?

OBS is my favorite to use. It's free and has come a long way since it's beginning. Almost as many options as Xsplit.

Shadowplay (with a Nvidia GPU) is fine.
If you press a certain combination or button it saves the last minutes (1-20 you choose it)
No real FPS drops or better said i don´t feel a difference if i have it active and the quality is nice too.

So you had an awesome battle? Press a button and finish, no other ***.

Or use Fraps in my opinion.. :P

FRAPS is still the best for raw video capture (imo)...just make sure you have a massive amount of storage space. You can use the other things mentioned but the quality that you can produce with FRAPS is the best I have found. If you are not that worried about your finished project being 1080 res. or better, then there are a lot of options. I also use Dxtory but the game takes a performance hit using it. For me at least.

Shadow play is great if you are using an Nvidia capture card.

You can set it up to where you press one hot-key and the past set amount of minutes is recorded and saved.

That way you don't have to remember to constantly be recording or stress out your storage / CPU.

Other than that I would recommend OBS or Action Mirilis.

I use Dxtory (using it I actually get smaller performance hit than with Fraps), but MSI Afterburner & Nvidia Shadowplay are good also.

After reviewing each of the major packages I determined Action! is the best and that is what I use. I use Sony Movie Studio 12 for video editing.

Fraps can only record in the resolution and FPS you play at which for me would be a problem as I play at 2560X1600 resolution at 60 FPS which would fill up your hard drive way too quickly and would take way too much time to process to 1080p internet video.

Action! amazingly was also the cheapest package (for those of us who don't wear eyepatches) at $20 compared to fraps at $30 and some others at 50. I know the prices fluctuate a lot for each package however.

Thank you all for the wonderful tasty feedback - I don't care what anyone says we do have a wonderful community and despite our alliance allegiences we all seem to enjoy fruit, whether it be strawberries, bananas or blueberries. Now to finalize on some downloading and get to capturing. I have so much music I envision adding to these and just having fun watching myself making a fool of myself or wrecking players or being wrecked in Cyrodiil.

Shadowplay is the best one performance-wise by far. You get high quality video and barely drop a frame. Like said above, you don't even have to start the recording before the fight, you can just save the last couple of minutes whenever you had a good fight.

"Damn, that was a good fight" > press save > done, not even a lag

It does require a somewhat new Nvidia card though (600 series or newer I think).

I purchased fraps a few years ago and its always been really good quality. I don't take a fps hit from using it either. Typically 100 fps recording or not on my 7970 card. PVP can drop the fps pretty hard when large groups collide, but its always smooth.

The AMD Raptr app has a where you can hit a button and capture the last 15 minutes of game play. I don't use it though, I prefer fraps.

Raw footage will take up a ton of space. I dump my avi recordings in a folder that adobe encoder watches and encodes over night to 1080p for youtube. a 1hour video in avi will be about 200gb and it will be 1.8gb after encoding.

OBS is the best free one I've come across. But the best you can do is bind a key to start and stop recording.

Shadowplay is awesome in that you can retroactively record what has happened.

And if you want footage of that mass dragon leap, I believe one of my Guildies recorded it.

ok that's useful. i always run on windowed since it's the smoothest to alt-tab to everything else.

I use shadowplay now. I used to use fraps and shadowplay beats it by a lot.

Zero fps drop, record only when you want and looks just as good if not better than fraps.

Only downside of shadowplay is having so much awesome footage to go through.

You guys are awesome! Thank you so much for the plethora of feedback on this thread - now I need to see what my machine can handle without compromising my gaming experience. Won't mention names but so many good ones from the folks in Daggerfall lit that light bulb in my head about doing my own video capturing.

I use shadowplay, doesn't stress the cpu since it uses gpu. Also shadow is set up for 2 minutes but you can change that to anything you like (1-20min I think). Shadow works so that it will constantly have that amount of recording going and once you hit save you get the last eg 2 minutes saved, so once something happens you can just save it.

Also supports manual recording so when you know you're going to want to record this epic stuff without limits (except hdd) you can do that.

Shadowplay also supports twitch streaming in case you're into that. It's for Nvidia cards only and is included in Nvidia GeForce Experience software.

I've used Shadowplay with windowed fullscreen and it records video without any issues. Sometimes it doesn't record any audio.

It does need to be set to capture desktop to record ESO.

Wowowowow.... just turned on Shadowplay with my 970. Set it to Fullscreen (yes, I see the capture desktop option, but rather not) and works flawlessly. I mean... wow. Didn't even skip, no lag, no wating. Hit Alt-F10 and that's it. Like nothing happened but it automagically saved a beautiful 5-minutes HD video on my drive.

    Wow. Loving this.

PS: just FYI, if you record again shorter than the length, it won't "double-record" which is nice, as you don't have to worry of double-recording for space and performance concerns. I mean, if it's set to 5min, say after saving your video and you saved again in 2 minutes, you only get 2 minutes video. Not another 5 where the last 3 is duplicates. This is cool.

Trying shadowplay at the moment, but doesn't seem to record.

upon enabling, the icon shows up green, then immediately stops again. anyone else encountered that?

can't use OBS, as OBS seems to want to downscale to 4096x1080, which is pointless to me.

Just got a 970 and trying out shadowplay but it's weird. It wants to only record while aero theme in windows is activated. Though when i record with that I get a fps stuttering but my fps is at like 80, which would be the same without recording as well. Possibly the fix of the stutter is disabling the aero but then as I said it won't record...QQ.

Also only wants to record in 'Allow desktop recording' way and not ingame so less quality :(

DXtory is fine for me to record but I always forget to start it before a fight... why I want to get shadowplay to work.

I use OBS with NVEnc @ 100000kbit. Footage looks like dxtory/fraps and you still have only like 1-2 fps loss. And filesize is small aswell.

Check my youtube channel(sig) for quality ;)

Shadowplay only works with ESO when you enable desktop recording. The quality shouldn't drop unless you have the video quality setting turned down.

It will not record unless Fullscreen (only this option) is selected.

What I said wasn't true is that it only records while in fullscreen mode, since that statement was incorrect.

Also I don't see what the big deal is with enabling desktop capture. It only picks up the monitor that I have set as my main.
