New Templar DPS Build - Leveling

Hey all,

New Templar here (level 26 so far) and am posting a leveling build that I feel is really helping me a lot - I really welcome constructive feedback from anyone / everyone to help improve this (mostly for myself ;) but for others that enjoy the Templar class)

Templar class as a whole:
- Yes, there are problems with it - resource management in trials, lack of DPS or utility while achieving high DPS output

- They have few synergies with weapon skills

- Lack of tanks needed and they really don't have to many built in tank skills

Despite these problems - I still enjoy the Templar class due to the flexibility of it, you can create awesome themed "sub classes" (Spartan due to spear, Immortal DW, Crusader Mace and Shield or some type of Archangel class 2H)

This is the PVE Leveling DW Immortal build:

Build in general (from a level 26 perspective)
- Reflective Light (Sun Flare morph) - awesome AOE and decent damage Instant cast start

- Solar Barrage gives decent AOE damage + bonus damage so I like it more over all then surge etc due to the damage it gives

- Puncturing Sweep - Key ability - AOE and a Knockback which interrupts NPC mob attacks (heavy attacks) also gives you the damage you need PLUS a 40% damage heal - I can solo really anything without problem with this skill alone spamming it for story line or harder mobs

- Rapid Strike (Flurry morph) - awesome single target stamina dump for damage as for when mana runs out

- Inner Light (mage light morph) - more crit = epic

Gear is 5 light 2 heavy (Chest and Shoulders Heavy for looks ;))
Mundus Stone - The Thief for crit.

Attributes: 0/49/0 - I prefer the survivability and non-stop movement of the Templar never needing to stop

    For leveling:

You really don't need more than Puncturing Sweep and a Warlock set to keep your magicka there.

If you want a loadout for soloing dolmens and bosses, go sword and shield, put sun shield on your bars, breath of life, spell symmetry, rune focus, and Puncturing Sweep.

I'd recommend 7 piece light for more magicka regen, too.

    Hey bud,

Thanks for the comments / feedback - I am not much into soloing bosses / dolmens to be honest - I don't mind waiting for groups.

I agree on the magicka sustain - hence why I went 0/25/0 (level 26 atm).

Other than that - whats your thoughts on the build in general?

Like your build, i would add breath of life or other morph to a second bar and maybe some cc to it like the javelin (2nd aedric spear, great against melee and archer) or eclipse (4 dawn's wrath, excellent to help caster kill themselves)

Good though, what is your weapon on second bar? (Having a bow or a staff may help in some cases, kite boss around etc)

    hey buddy!

I actually have not leveled a second weapon yet! I cannot decide...

I like the idea of One Hand and Shield for more difficult bosses and for possible tanking endgame pvp...

But then Destro Staff looks so sexy still...

I am open to suggestions but I am thinking right now Sword and Board Tanky Caster...

    Shield Charge to enemy
Solar Barrage for AOE and Buff
    Puncturing Sweep Spam
    Low Slash - Armor Debuff
    Ransack - Stamina Debuff

It goes well with the 0/49/0 attribute spending and the Spear Shield passive...also I use 2 Heavy armor so it could work well...Mannimarco and Molag Bal are really tough so I hear - same with vet. ranks - so i'm thinking this would work best...im not big into healing....

    Thoughts guys?

    I'm leveling my 2nd Templar.

A few notes about your build:

    1) I'd go resto staff before anything else if you want to do end game. Max that and light armor.
    2) Solar Barrage is garbage compared to just more Puncturing Sweep spam or leveling destro staff and getting Unstable Wall/Impulse for AoE. The debuff can be eaten by other players.
    3) Reflective Light has less value than Vamp's Bane for single target DPS simply because Vamp's Bane is one of the only single target buffs that you can spec for.
    4) Spear Shards is massively important for just about anything. It's high damage ability that can proc Aedric Spear's bread-and-butter of Burning Light. That will work a lot better than Reflective Light for AoE and also gives you an on-demand stun if you spec it to Luminous Shards.
    5) Inner Light doesn't buff the critical strike of Puncturing Strikes, since that goes off Weapon Crit.

Personally, to level quickly and be able to solo just about anything:

    Sword and Shield
    Resto Staff
    Heavy Armor
    Light Armor
    Lord Mundus
5 piece Warlock Set (even level 1, which you can wear all the way to Vet Rank 1)

    Level these ultimates:
    Empowering Sweep (good for tanking)
    Remembrance

Loadout (resto staff) 1) Puncturing Sweep, Spear Shards, Sun Shield, Rushed Ceremony, <whatever ability you want to level>

Loadout (sword and shield) 2) Puncturing Sweep, Sun Shield, Rushed Ceremony, Channeled Focus <whatever ability you want to level>

You can plow anything this way.

I solo'd all public dungeons, all dolmens, and all world bosses up to about VR 8 this way and I did every quest in every zone.

Looking back to my first Templar, there's an awful lot in the trees that is worthless:
    Focused Charge (bugged)
    Eclipse (Garbage)
Backlash (There's really no reason to try to play caster DPS)
Solar Flare (worthless aside from Dark Flare's healing debuff, which is only important in PVP)
    Healing Ritual (why bother?)
    Piercing Javelin (completely worthless)

If you want to do a weapon based stamina dpser, Radiant Aura is about it (plus the passives.)

But I just listed every talent I wouldn't take ever.

Hmmm this is all GREAT info guys..

So lets remove then Inner light and say go 2H?

2H for the executioner morph (Reverse Slash) worth it?

Maybe do something like - Critical Charge, Spear Shard, Puncturing Sweep Reverse Slash spam Rally as a buff?

    Thoughts?

Yes, I think you should look at the Crusader build for end game. You can respec and you'll have the gold to do it. Level what is convenient, but for end-game DPS the only proven Templar DPS build right now is the Crusader.

I don't know how it will level, but you can try it.

I just posted a topic regarding a new templar (myself). This thread is helpful - thank you.

@Pmarsico9 - Using your advice for leveling as an Imperial Templar would you suggest to put all of my points into health while leveling? Or should I throw some into stamina and magic.

    Thank you....

P.S. I'm going to link this thread in my new thread in case a young templar has a similar question.
I didn't think my hangover was that bad this morning until I spent 10 minutes trying to log into my old Etch-A-Sketch

I leveled with everything in health. If you stack light armor and spam Puncturing Sweep you should be fine.

All you need as a Templar is Puncturing Sweep and Quick Siphon. You don't need a shield, you don't need any other skills, just 5 light armor for magicka sustain. Puncturing Sweep triggers the heal from Siphon with every strike, on top of the heal from Sweep itself. That way you can solo dolmens, any amount or type of bosses, and public dungeons, without ever working up a sweat. Any damage you take will instantly be healed. I've not once met an encounter where the healing wasn't sufficient, and I don't even use anything to increase armor.

Wow that sounds pretty epic for smooth soloing. I laid of resto staff after I got regeneration unlocked and started focusing one 1h/shield to get up to shield charge. Then I was going to go back and unlock the rest of Resto staff. I'm only 2 points away from unlocking shield charge now, then back to resto staff to unlock quick siphon.

I might even be able to start working on my 2h or bow earlier knowing what you just shared. Thank you!
