Framerate Drop Since Update 4?

Hey guys/gals,

I was just wondering if anybody else was having this problem as well. I logged in after the big update, and once in I noticed the colors looked a bit darker and sharper. It looked pretty nice. But, when I started playing, my frame rate went down to about 45-50 fps. Normally I was right about 60. I played around with the options some but for whatever reason I couldn't get it to run smoothly on ultra.

Then I found out if I put it on full screen, it runs like a dream at 70-75 fps. It's really groovy, and combat is super smooth. But if I put it on "Windowed (Full Screen)" it drops back down to 45-50, but really feels like less.

Has this happened to anybody else? It's not too big a deal, I just liked the windowed mode so I could pop open a browser window or chat box real quick and still see my game going in case I started getting attacked or something.

Thanks guys 'n gals

Well, I have not noticed any framerate drop here but the game gets quite juddery now. Not as smooth flowing - I play windowed (full screen)

Only thing I can think of is that when the new full screen mode was introduced it was bugged, whether it was to do with a memory leak I can't recall, but I think a lot of players found Windowed (full screen) better. Perhaps the full screen mode has now been fixed, and is the preferred setting with the new PFX slider options.

No idea really, just throwing out random thoughts in case they prompt anyone to come with something. I haven't personally noticed any difference since this week's patch, and have the PFX sliders to the left. If I remember correctly, I play in Windowed (full screen) mode but I'll check. I don't PvP so don't have any of the performance issues associated with Cyrodil.

@ers101284b14_ESO‌ and @gunplummer‌ , are you both playing in Windowed (fullscreen)? If so, does it fix everything when you Full Screen?

@Skraticus‌ I have tried all versions of it. Both Fullscreen, Windowed fullscreen, And Windowed. Nothing seems to matter.

Man, that sucks. This seems like a good time for one of the admins to pop in and say "hey, here comes a fix..."

Before I started the thread I did some Googling to see if I could find a solution or any news about it. Seems like like a handful of people had the same issue back in May after an update.

They probably don't have a fix for it yet. And seeing how its an isolated incident I'm going to guess its hard to track down.

Also there was another thread about it and they already popped into that one.

I haven't tried full screen yet, but will check tonight to see if it makes a difference. Before update 4 I was able to get 60 outside of town and 50-55 in town. Also with everything on and set to high or better. Even in PvP i could hit 55 on average with grass turned on, but i'm not sure if it has any relation (Not a pc guy).

Well, I just hopped off ESO, thought my computer was gonna go ablaze. Was running a dungeon and everything was still running super smooth, but I noticed the computer fan was getting louder and louder. Hopped out to find that both GPUs were at 82°C ...

Does that mean my computer is breaking or is there something really wonky going on with ESO? Never had a problem running it before.

My fps dropped 15-20%. Get this: I just upgraded my processor, too, and by all rights my fps should have jumped 15-20%. I actually upgraded my processor specifically to increase my ESO framerate. *shakes head*. Note: I build my own computers and overclock them too, so I'm knowledgeable about what my builds should do.

Yep, my FPS has definitely decreased since the patch. I've always played full screen and ultra settings getting consistent 80-100 FPS. Much less now in the 40-50's. particle effects have been left at lowest but I absolutely refuse to put any of the other settings on anything other than max. It worked fine before so I shouldn't have to. Plus, I didn't spend all this time and money on building a brand new PC to play on lower settings.

Except the usual drop to 30-35 in towns and pvp my FPS didn't change much. I play on Full HD with Ultra, particle around 70% and max view distance, no Addons and FPS locked at 60.

To keep your fans "less busy" just cap the FPS at 60, your monitor cant show you more anyways with a 60hz.

    I have a 144hz monitor...

But what I wanted to comment about was capping FPS at 60 or any number: on my computer when I hit the FPS cap my fps makes a very sudden and dramatic drop, briefly, and/or my fps hangs momentarily. So I can't do that without a lot of annoyance.

Well, I just tried playing again, and only for a couple minutes. Alt-tabbed out to check the temps and both GPUs were at 77C ... all I did was go womp on a daedra. Me thinks I got more than one problem now.

when you complain about temperature issues, you should:
    - mention the type of SLI, if you have it
    - name your type, manufacturer and model of the gfx card(s) you use
    - name what settings, if any, you have at default/altered from the card's control panel
    - name the crivers you are currently working it on
    - specify the version of DX you are using
    - specify whther you are using any external software that allegedly "boosts"/OCs your gfx cards
    - last but not least, have some understanding of what cooling entails. Many cases it is just you..
.an inappropriate tower case, in space or architecture,
.a cooling architecture that may be insufficient, affecting your gfx cards as well
.a lack of care..when was the last time you took it out to the porch/bk yard and dust blew it?

    in terms of FPS issues:
    - specify whether you are using a DVI-x connection or not between said card(s) and your monitor. Or do not mention FPS, ever :)

i am not a PC geek. I just searched and learned so i could have some understanding, a basic one, before building my own. And already, there you go..i bet you i am missing a lot more as it is. Two-liners on performance issues..just what kind of help do you expect to receive?

Actually the whole point of this thread was to see if other people were having framerate/performance issues after Update 4 when normally they didn't have any. Then later I happened to notice my computer was running hotter than normal when it shouldn't be while playing. I simply thought I would add that in case other people were having a similar issue. I asked "does that mean there's something wrong with my computer or is ESO wonky" to show that I'm open for the idea my computer might be the issue itself, and not just blame it all on ESO as most people do.

That being said, here are my PC guts:

2 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 with EVGA Pro SLI Bridge 2-Way Graphics Cards (100-2W-0021-LR)

ASRock Z77 Extreme3 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

    SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC

Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics

SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC256B/WW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

    Crucial Ballistix 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLT2KIT8G3D1608DT1TX0

    - My case has fans in the front, back, top, and bottom along with fans inside the graphics cards and directly on top of the CPU.

    - I've cleaned the case out just a few days ago with no change in temps.

    - I have not altered, or overclocked anything

    - Using an HDMI connection to the monitor at the moment

I really didn't want to turn this into a technical thread as I already have one going on the NVidia forums. As I said, it was just to see if other people were suffering in a similar manner after the update to see if something needed to be addressed by Zenimax.

    Update 4.
Was silky smooth graphics with almost zero lag with combat skills in V3.
Now 55-60fps ....start stuttering will drop down to 30fps sometimes and eventually recover.
Lastnight outside of town stuttering was every few seconds or so...with bad ability lag in combat.
Inside town the stutter was often half second apart or less.
Was like being in BETA when the servers were load testing.

Really wish I could just roll back to the last patch. :(

Same drop... Although I didn't notice right away. In fact I swear initially I had a FPS increase, then yesterday I was having a 15-20 FPS drop and stuttering in certain areas.

I did update to the new nvidia driver released the other day and then noticed the drop. But then I installed the previous version (that had been running fine up until now), however that didn't bring back the FPS... :\

After the update I notice frame rate swings that are dependent on where I am looking. Also a few fights yesterday and today that were bizarre due to lag. I was at around 30-40 almost always and now unpredictably fall to 10-15.

Same here. I was in an instanced dungeon and it would swing between 75 and 12.

I've been struggling to play the game since the lighting changes. Dropping from high to medium barely helps. So I've had to purchase something new to play on. I've only been researching, buying and selling, and farming nodes the last 2 months since I can't do much else. I can't get involved in any public delves or I'm suffering into single digit FPS. Overworld FPS is down to about 15 to 20 in combat situations.

Yeah, about that last update ... it hosed up Skyrim pretty bad for a lot of people if you were using any of those ENBs from Boris V. If you weren't, then you're fine. But, another game, another problem.

If your new cpu has hyperthreading try disabling it for ESO. I get a boost in fps.

Those who are complaining there GPU are getting hot, I am jealous, that means at least your cards are being used. ESO is a demading game when working properly. since the lighting improvement patch mine card/cards most of the time only running 50-70% load.

Oldish thread, but I'm still suffering with this sudden FPS drop issue. The main city in Eastmarch stutters every few steps. It's annoying and a shame, really, considering I'm using 680 GTX SLI. The fps dips were never this bad. There were a few every now and then, but nothing more than -5 when loading into a new area/town.
