A Wild Idea - Light Metal Crafting

Okay, since the servers are down and I can't play that game, I thought I'd finally take the time to put to paper (figuratively speaking) an idea I had of how to get certain weapon requests into the game without adding even more complexity to the current crafting lines.

Now, as a disclaimer, I know that there is very little chance of this being put into the game. Still, I wanted to put it out there.

TL:DR option

A new crafting line that would allow you to create chain mail, studded leather, spears, flails, etc.

What Is It?

Light Metal Armor/Weapon Crafting.

No Really. What Are You Talking About?

So we have probably all seen the posts asking for new weapons and armor types in the game. I think that some of the most prominent are for spears and chain mail. However, I have also seen calls for other weapon types as well, and I think that we are missing that kind of in-between look that exists between leather armors and full plate mail. Also, it is tough to figure out where exactly you would craft items like spears, since they are both woodworking and blacksmithing. This new crafting line would fill the armor gap, while also giving us some new weapon options in a fairly logical place.

How It Would Work

Just like the other crafting lines, this line would have both weapons and armor that could be created and deconstructed, will all of the same traits and crafting styles open to it. However, unlike the current lines, the armors and weapons would require a mix of materials to craft the items. For example, say that a current piece of heavy armor needed 8 metal to create, and a current medium armor piece needed 8 leather. The new 'light metal' piece of armor might need 4 metal and 4 leather pieces. Similarly, a spear might need 4 metal and 4 wood.

The new armor line would need new passives and an active built for it, along with new sets. Weapons could fit into the current lines with new bonuses for the different weapon types (maybe spears add defense, flails a chance to stun or something) or be granted new skill lines (though I don't know why they'd need this)

Weapon Types

This new crafting line would have spears, of course, both one- and two-handed varieties. But it would obviously need more than that to fill out the weapon types and to give it more 'bulk' as a crafting line. I believe that flails would fit the bludgeoning part pretty well, and would require both wood and metal as well. Instead of axes, picks could work for that type of weapon. Two-handed flails and picks would be fairly stupid-looking, so this is where we could get some of the more traditional polearms in their place. Pikes or glaives would be the two-handed spears, and then we could get some halberds and other polearm types to round out the weapon list.

Armor Types

There is a wide variety of armor types not currently seen in the game that fall in between the current leather styles and the plate that most heavy armor styles are. Chain and ring mail, studded leather, splint mail, scale mail, etc. All of these could be represented in this line in the various racial styles. Basically, any armor type that involves using both metal and leather/padding together could be put into this line.

    Glass

Glass, from what I have seen, looks like it is coming as a motif style, available in light, medium, and heavy variants.

    Glass

Glass Weapons and Armor have been a staple in Elder Scroll games forever serving as the high end of light armor. Why it is not in ESO has always been a mystery to me. It is good armor and looks great.

No way. Don't need hundreds of new skill lines and new mats.

    Fine as is.

More Crafting is better. And, these would be more of a choice not a necessity to play the game. I do agree that we don't need any more mats. Well, maybe Glass.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Aren't they adding Glass armor ''soon''? Thought i saw something about it in the quakeqon panel.

Many might not realize this but each armor type is tied to a specific stat....

    light - magicka
    med - stamina
    heavy - health

I have disagreed with this relationship because of how damn important magicka is to all characters (you need it to use your class abilities) and the reason why the majority are skirt wearers (even those DKs who should be in heavy).

Until Zenimax are willing to disassociate armor with a stat type, you will never see a new armor type.

First, you'd have to change ZOS' stance on spears. : /

I think thrown weapons (like we had in Morrowind) would work too.

Pretty much covered it. They need to get away from this skirt wearing, stick wielding mentality. There should have never been medium armor in the first place. Should've been strictly light and heavy armor, with no differentiation between the two except light armor being about speed and heavy armor being about defense, and then using a perk system to build your character a certain way whether higher in defense, higher in magicka or higher in attack or a hybrid, depending on how many points you have earned.

    Besides, there's chain mail already...

Craft yourself Nord Medium armor (high level). That's leather + chain mail.

I agree with some new weapons though... And some new skill lines..

    I'd love to see:

"1 handed + spell" and "unarmed"

What would that new armor provide?
Light is for mages, medium - for physical damage, heavy - for being tanky. All the classical TES armor types are already covered, no?

While interesting suggestions / ideas, ESO already has a huge problem, that would become even bigger: armour types and what they do. The problem is not that prominent with weapons, although we do have the staff versus anything else story too.

It has taken them several months and there is still hardly any "balance" within the 3 armour types, of course the odds being heavily in favour of the Light variant, still. Introducing one more armour type...

One of the major flaws of ESO, if not an actual disaster, is exactly the separation of armour types and the association of each with specific attributes, skills and synergies with weapon and class abilities / skills.

It would be awesome if all this mess was just not here, and armour types were the good old way we knew about them in Elder Scroll games, and then you could have as many types as you fancied.

In ESO (sadly) the choice of armour is paramount and a major factor whether your character will turn out to be "cool" or "useless" (Light Armour, "bathrobes" "skirts", that old, long and boring story).

Did you really just dig this thread up just to try to make that point, Kelly? Because at least my idea is sort of lore friendly.

This sounds as a good suggestion, but then I'm always for more crafting options :)

Besides spears I would very much like to see some halberds (which could fit in the already existing 2-handler weapon skill line)

I think these ideas could be incorporated into existing crafting lines... crafting could be a bit more "minecrafty" to where you build a straight staff (a weapon in its own right) then you go to the Smith and choose to make a Halberd, which requires a straight staff.

There are a lot of things that could be cross-craftable. It would make it so players have to learn alternate crafting styles and/or would support a larger trade on this craftable crafting materials.
What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.
    That's right... Horse.
