Tips for beginners

Just reading through some of the posts here and also being fairly new to PvP in this game, I feel it would be useful to get some tips going for the new players.

I know PvP can be quite daunting to new players and any advice/help can be invaluable from the more experienced.

I'm not great at PvP so I'll leave the actual combat/spec/tactics help to those better equipped, however, here are a few tips I will provide...
  1. Do not be afraid to die, it won't hurt you, honestly.
  2. On this same note, don't let people who taunt/laugh etc at you after you are dead bother you, It will happen, laugh at it and continue on. I usually lay there and let them get it all out of their system before I re-spawn.
  3. Experiment with your abilities, don't go looking for a cookie cutter fotm build, there are a ton of combinations out there, find something you enjoy and stick with it.
  4. Buy some siege - Wall repair and Forward camps especially, your alliance will thank you for it.
  5. Spend some points in alliance abilities when you can, the Siege shield ability helps a ton
  6. If your solo, find a group, there are always groups looking for people, join one, follow them and learn from them

I'm sure I'll think of more to add, but that's it for now.

    1. If you're with people taking a scroll, let someone else take it. There are always organised groups with people who can deal with it better than you.
    2. When sieging walls and inner walls, do NOT hit the door. Hit the wall
    3. When sieging walls, use Alliance ballistae. Do not use fire ones as they hit for 1000 damage instead of 2000 damage.
    4. When you tag along with a group that is stealthed, copy them. Stealth up or you will be bitched at.
    5. When stealthed, do NOT cast. Casting, especially heals, will break stealth and show the enemy where you are.
    6. If you're ever low on Alliance Points, repair the walls for extra points.
    7. NEVER assume that others will put up forward camps in keeps under siege. If you put one up then you will be loved.
    8. When attacking outposts, always hit the sides. The front, if defended, is an oily deathtrap.
    9. If you're in a group with random people, ask and make sure that at least one person is running purge. Charging into a well defended breach without it is suicide.
    10. If there's no groups up, make one, then follow the above advice and educate others to help improve your PvP experience.

Tip 1, save your money and don't play. wait at least another year for the bugs to be fixed, and then IF there is still a pvp player base left, give it a go.

Not exactly the tips I was looking for :open_mouth:

However I will add, that yes, this game has bugs, yes the PvP has bugs, but there is still a ton of fun to be had.

    5. When stealthed, do NOT cast. Casting, especially heals, will break stealth and show the enemy where you are.
    6. If you're ever low on Alliance Points, repair the walls for extra points.
    10. If there's no groups up, make one, then follow the above advice and educate others to help improve your PvP experience.

    In my opinion:

    5. Don't cast Heals or Damage Dealers. Casting a buff such as Immovable will not pull you out of stealth.

    6. Repairing walls uses more AP than it offers, do not repair unless you're out of AP and have excess repair kits.

    10. Don't lead a group unless you know what you're doing. Feel free to recruit a large party and give the crown to someone who has a better tactical understanding.

*11. Always listen to what the leader of the group is saying. When he says "Get on crown," get your butt on that crown icon and don't move more than 5 feet from him at all times. As stated; if they're stealth, you should be too.

My biggest suggestion is to join a consistent group or PvP guild, and learn from them.

When I first started to PvP, I basically was just looking for people to kill. I didn't know how siege equipment worked, or taking resources, or the porting system. I didn't start to understand the ins and outs of Cyrodil until I joined up with a PvP guild and ran with a larger crew. You'll pick up things pretty quickly and someone is always willing to answer any questions as to why you're doing what your doing.

Don't forget to check the charge on your weapon, you can use it up more in PVP than PVE. Try out the Blackwater Blade campaign first to get a feel for it but don't forget your not playing with veterans.

    5. Thanks for adding that, forgot that DD also breaks stealth
    6. It does use more points than it costs, but that's assuming you have the kits already and need extra AP back

I don't think most of these of these rules will help people as much as they'd hope for. If I had to make a list for people to memorize upon entering Cyrodiil for their first time it would be:

    1) Be aware of everything around you and learn to let go. So many people get tunnel vision and get focused on that guy they almost have dead running back through his teammates that they expose themselves and get killed, usually without catching their quarry.
2)Learn Your Cyrodiil Bs. Block, Barrel Roll, Break Free, and Bash.
    • Block will stop most forms of CC used on you and will drastically reduce all damage done to you. This is very useful if you find yourself in an exposed postion or you know an incoming high damage ability like snipe, lethal arrow or an incoming crystal fragment is about to hit you. Just don't hold it down through regular white attacks or you'll quickly lose all your stamina.
    • Learn to Barrel Roll(or Dodge Roll if you must). This ability more than any other can save your ass. You can dodge roll out incoming invasions, ambush, snipes, crystal fragments, talons, pretty much anything other than Soul Assault. During this period of time people can't cast or use abilities on you and all projectiles coming to you will miss. The timing of Barrel Rolling is an acquired thing so practice it often.
    • Break Free can break out out of any true cc including negate (the purple bubble your head that stops you from casting, using potions, and weapon swapping) as well as Negate(The black sphere put around you that makes all magick damage done to you reflect back to you and will eventually explode for a lot of damage if cast by an NPC). Any time you lose control of your character you can use break-free (unless you're bugged with unbreakable CC). Break free can be done by pressing both mouse buttons at the same time.
    • Bash is extremely useful for people who are stupid enough to cast in your face. Soul assault being the most common, but crystal fragments, the templar prayer abilities, and even people trying to set up or burn siege can be bashed. Bash can also be used by pressing both mouse buttons at the same time.
3)Casting is dangerous. People who spend a lot of time casting make themselves targets and there are many interrupt abilities that will CC you if they catch you casting as well as bash from melee range. Be aware of what is around you if you try casting, from stealth or when not being targeted it is ok.
4)Don't stand in a DK's banner. Don't stand in bat swarm. Don't stand in oil. If someone is using any of these, get out of their sphere of influence
5)Manage your resources. Don't use all your stamina chasing someone down, only to get charged by them or someone else and not have enough to get up. Don't use all your magicka in a fight and not have enough to heal yourself, put up a shield, or bolt escape away.
    6) Put some stamina on your horse or don't run your horse to zero stamina when your in hostile territory. Plenty of people love knocking people racing at breakneck speed off their horses. Always keep a decent chunk of stamina on your horse so you have enough time to respond and dismount if surprised on your horse.
    7) Put some impenetrable on your gear. Impenetrable subtracts directly from your opponents crit rating. For ever 10 Impenetrable you subtract 1 from your opponents crit. It is currently the most powerful PVP trait and everyone is advised to use at least 300 impen or more if possible.
    8) Don't expect your PVE glass cannon build to do well in PVP. Dead people can't kill anything. If you plan to start PVPing regularly, expect to build a set of PVP gear with less points in magicka/stamina and more points in health. There are exceptions, but you are rarely ill advised to upping your total health in cyrodiil.

I could probably triple this list but some advice comes with showing more than telling. These are good basics for beginners.

    - Don't steal/use other people's siege equipment. If they set it up then they'll be intending to use it and will probably do a better job with experience. This applies especially with oil where it can make or break a successful defence.

1-20. Learn to heal. Chances are, if you are a beginner, you are underleveled or under-experienced or both. You will have a much greater impact for your team if you heal others while you get your pvp skillz going. As soon as you can, learn purge and then morph it to efficient purge.

Since you probably don't have gobs of AP to buy siege equipment either, you can serve a vital purpose by keeping your teammates with siege weapons healthy by purging and healing them during a siege.

There's a couple pieces of siege you can buy for 450 gold a piece (I'm a fairly sure it's 450g). It's a decent investment when you start out instead of wasting AP on it. Before I had Purple gear I was going through backpacks looking for set piece and upgrading them. The pieces I got from backpacks that I didn't use were deconned or sold.

    3. When sieging walls, use Alliance ballistae. Do not use fire ones as they hit for 1000 damage instead of 2000 damage.

Agree BUT - if you don't have the AP to buy these, you can take advantage of the fire ones to target players/ballistae on top of the walls, which is useful. Only one or two are needed usually.

    Also:

    DO THE INTRO QUEST

It gives you a free skill point and gives you a feel for how the different siege weapons work in a no-stress environment. And go in by yourself a few times and just work out how to get around.
