Feeling disheartened with my character... what am I doing wrong?!

Hi guys!

So... I finally reached V12 earlier this week. Genuinely wishing I hadn't! I've always been a solo player so was a little miffed after realising that basically the whole of Craglorn was a large group job. So, I decided I was going to sort myself a better build. I've been kinda doing whatever seemed good at the time, rather than actually thinking my choices through, so I decided to look at every possible option and really think everything through. I've literally reset my skills and attributes, only to get extremely p'd off and just go back to exactly what I had before.

I am a Khajiiti Templar. Yeah, I know. Not the best start, but clearly didn't think that bit through and it seems like a heck of a lot of work to throw away just to change race. Anyway. I wear a full set of Heavy Armor, with 2h Greatsword weapon, Restoration Staff as secondary.

Here is a layout of all my skills, passives and abilities I have slotted.
http://esohead.com/calculator/skills#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

I am wearing 3 items of The Willow's Path Set and 4 of the Twilight Embrace set.
I have 3 Magick Glyphs, 2 Health and 2 Stamina, all either gold or purple quality on my armor. On my Sword I have a gold Monumental Glyph of Absorb Magicka.
Jewellery I have:
Neck: 1400 Flame Resistance, 73 Magicka
Ring 1: 11 Spell Damage, 73 Health
Ring 2: 458 Armor, 73 Health

I want a better Spell Crit value, and I also want to know whatever it is I'm doing wrong that means I constantly run out of Magicka. I have tried using Spell Symmetry, but whenever I try it in a solo situation (ie when there isn't a healer around to fix my suicidal tenancies) I tend to simply murder myself, which kind of defeats the object in my opinion :P

I use Fortified Sweetrolls which increase my max Magicka and Health by 312 for 1 hour, which I have on at all times.

Please people of Tamriel, help a gal out. What the hell have I done wrong? I'm completely open to the idea of resetting all of my attributes and skills again if I have to, I just want a character I feel proud of, and at the moment I feel kind of ashamed of my little cat. Thanks y'all.

I can't help much with the Templar side of things, but one thing that struck me was that you have no 5 set of armour. It's the 5 sets that give the nice bonuses. You might want to look into it.

Hi :) Thanks for the reply. I have been looking at the 5 piece bonuses, and to be honest nothing really jumps out at me as being worth it thus far. I seem to have a better result with a 4 piece bonus and 3 piece bonus with the sets I have, cause I get extra spell damage and spell crit, whereas I don't feel like increasing all regen in combat by 15% and increasing all healing received by 10% is worth losing the 4% spell crit or 8 spell damage... :/

    Here's my two cents.

Put all 49 attribute points into health. You can play with your magicka and stamina numbers with glyphs and with set bonuses.

    I'm a Khajiit NB, but I'm 100% magicka build.

If you're going to go with the 2H, you need to build your stamina. The sets you have are for magicka builds, not stamina ones. That's part of your problem I believe.

Hunding's Rage is a very good stamina build set.

My advice is go all magicka or all stamina in your build.

It is a fair bit more challenging to maintain magicka in a full set of heavy armor, the passives are great for health and for generally taking a beating but they aren't much for other resource regeneration.

As annoying as it is, you might find that you'll need to include a couple of pieces of light armor to bump up your magicka regen and spell damage. This will also allow you to find a couple of dropped sets for extra spell crit %.

If you haven't already, grab the Thief mundus stone, it gives 5% spell and weapon crit.

I don't think your build is too bad, it's more that your gear isn't focused on any one thing. Heavy armor doesn't seem to have been given much love during the dev cycle, it really only does one thing.

@matronicon‌, you know you can make your 4 set into a 5 set simply by crafting your weapons to the set? You don't have to sacrifice anything. You need to do both weapons so you don't lose the bonus when you swap.

I have a Templar Khajiit tank 1h-shield/resto that uses two 5-item sets: 4 armor pieces + resto for one set (Vampire's Kiss), and 3 armor pieces + Axe + Shield (Hist Bark) for the other. Interesting things happen when I switch between Vampire's Kiss and Hist Bark bonuses by swapping weapons...

Don't feel ashamed, Khajiit are fantastic!!! And they're the only race that knows the 2 Moons Dance! :)

    1) Medium Armor Expertise
    2) Robust III: Combat Health Recovery 30%
    3) Stealthy: Improves stealth radius 3m / Stealth Damage 9%
    4) Carnage: Improved Weapon Criticals 6%

I've actually considered going Khajiit Templar, when I do finally make a Khajit. The only problem I have with it is that I need more character slots to have one of each race. I think Khajiit is great, and you should still be able to sneak attack. Have you tried using Flawless Dawnbreaker as well as your Templar weapon damage passive? I think you might like those combinations. The only real 'loss' in your race traits is the Stealth damage and radius, but you can stealth around as a catman, and furthermore Invisibility and Muffle are coming out in the future in spellcrafting... So I wouldn't worry too much about that. I play an Imperial, and right now I'm training magic. I plan to use a bow in the future as well (really looking forward to it in fact, as I enjoy it on my Argonian Nightblade). None of those ranged weapons take advantage of Red Diamond. I still like it though. There's only a few races whose full list of passives work for almost any build, and that's pretty much Breton and Altmer. Dunmer are close, but their fire damage trait is kind of worthless if you're not doing fire damage (I still think Dunmer are pretty awesome). So anyway, I'm just trying to say I wouldn't feel like Khajiit can't be good Templars.

So I'm looking at your build and you currently are wielding a 2Hander in one hand and Restoration in the other. The real question is more what sort of fighting style you want to have though. Inner Light is a great ability, but I personally don't use it unless I'm going Light Armor heavy with sets that promote cost reduction and magic regeneration. On a Dragon Knight of mine, I've used a combination of Seducers and Warlock set... he can breath fire and spam green dragon blood like nobody's business, as well as spam Impulse. Obviously that is a fire mage build with some survivability, but you can do the same thing with a Templar if that is your desire. If you want to be a warrior that heals, that's another thing entirely. I'd definitely consider getting Dawnbreaker (Flawless Dawnbreaker) instead of Meteor for the weapon damage bonus on your 2hander. Additionally, you might find you enjoy using the 2hander with a gap closer from the class or the weapon, such as Critical charge, Toppling Charge, Explosive Charge etc etc. Puncturing Sweep is an amazing ability. I absolutely love it, and I was very happy when they changed that morph, so much so that I paid to respect to get that version of it. I'd personally use something different than Silver Leash, not because a stamina dump would be bad, but because you might find something else would serve your purposes better like Evil Hunter/Camouflage Hunter (from Fighters Guild) or Momentum/Rally (From 2hander).

On your restoration tree, I'd suggest not using Healing Ritual. I only see this move really being useful in a massive situation such as PvP or a big Raiding group of 12 or such. When you're in a team of 5 it just doesn't feel very useful, and your team will probably die before it takes effect. In a massive environment I could see it being much more useful. Check out Cleansing Ritual though which heals and also removes bad effects, Radiant Aura (which cranks up health and stamina recovery quite a lot), or Combat Prayer (from Restoration Line) which Heals yourself plus allies in a cone in front of you, as well as puts an armor/spell resistance shield on them AND adds a damage bonus to everyone effected by it. I think you'd find those 3 options would be better. If you still want to use Heavy Armor, I would suggest you mix in some light if you want to be a healer, and my suggestion is that you pick the Warlock pieces for that. Use everything else to get the Seducer set, and from there just tweak your enhancements how you like them.

One ability that I find is great for mitigation as well is Blazing Shield. I've used this ability even before it was cool to do so, and it allowed me to defeat things and solo things where other people had a hard time. The big difference is I tended to be a lot slower at killing things, but that is the fun of being a Knight in heavy armor wielding a claymore isn't it? I don't know if anything I've said helps you, but all I can offer is ideas based on my own gameplay, and what I think you might have been going for.

If you want to keep the heavy armor and not run out of magicka so fast, I suggest getting 5 piece seducer set, enchanting your jewlery with reduce magicka cost glyphs, raising your magicka regen to the softcap, and don't forget to pop a potion every once in awhile.

If you want more magicka then more magicka glyphs on items, trait sets with more magicka bonuses like seducer, change your jewelry (i'm surprised your using heavy armour as well as heaving an armour bonus ring) so you can get a trait bonus from it as well.

Personally I run with mostly light armour with my Templar because currently resource management is one of the big problems for the class. Personally I would probably change out some of the healing skills for solo play just leave breath of life or mutagen in and put in blazing spear for AoE and a gap closer (either two hand stampede or Templar toppling charge). I would only swap in silver leash for the gap closer if I knew I was going up against daedra. I'm also a big fan of the Total Dark morph of Eclipse for magic users when fighting trash.

If you haven't already add the precise trait to your weapons and use the thief mundus stone for more crit. Also if you haven't already use infused on the armour with the magicka glyphs for more magicka gain. Apologies if you already have done those just not clear from the opening post whether you have or not.

What are you doing now that you're V12? Now that levelling is out of the way, what are you doing that is making you disheartened with your kitty?

It seems like you want to get into more group content.
The big difference between group and solo content is how focussed you can be in your build. When you play Solo, you're tanking, healing and having to DPS alone. In group content, you can focus on one role, and you don't have to be that great in the others.

Your current setup reflects your solo gameplay up to now. You get your toughness from heavy armour, two handed is a DPS orientated weapon line and the combination of resto staff and templar abilities provide some healing.

It's just not that optimised for a partcular role. So lets see what we can do to make you more optimised.

The group roles best suited to Templars are tanking and healing.

For tanking, heavy armour and 1hand+shield is the safest bet. Not sure if you have 1hand+shield levelled but it's probably even more important than the heavy armour for tanking. The very first ability is a taunt so you can get started on tanking right away on lower level dungeons until you can build up your 1hand+shield passives.

For healing, light armour and restoration staff is a must. Not sure if you have light armour levelled but the magika passives are essential for sustaining healing spells over protracted battles. The most important light armour passives are the first ones so it shouldn't take you long to build up some efficiency.

Based on the Khajiit passives, tanking seems to be the superior choice. I notice you're maxxed out for crafting so it should be easy to craft the items you need. Spend some time thinking about the set bonuses. I highly recommend 5 items of seducers at least; even for your tanking build.

Let me know if you'd like anything more in-depth for either option.

Even from a solo play point of view, your ability bars can be set up better using just the skills you have available.

Keep your 7 heavy armour since that's where you have passives. Use a restoration staff on both bars. This is so you can regain magika by using the resto staff heavy attack.

    Bar one
    Puncturing Strikes
    Blazing Spear
    Toppling Charge
    Blazing Shield
    Breath of Life
    Meteor

This should be fine for mobs. Blazing spear the mob, charge in against another target in the mob that isn't stunned by blazing spear. Then spam puncturing strikes while moving to keep as many mobs within blazing spear AOE and in front of you. If you've bitten off too much, turtle under blazing shield and breath of life. they will eventually kill themselves against your shield.

    Bar two
    Vampire's Bane
    Blazing Spear
    Mutagen
    Silver Leash
    Breath of Life
    Meteor

This is your ranged / kiting bar. Use vampire's bane, light attacks and silver leash while moving backwards. Be sure not to spend too mch magika or stamina. Every now and again, the boss will do some kind of special attack while stationary. During that time, spam blazing spear on them repeatedly as much as you can.
Keep mutagen up if needed. You can also use it before mobs.

You have a HEAP of skill points in crafting - even for crafts you don't seem to be using. Have you considered respeccing out of them to get more skills in other areas? There are lots of fantastic skills you're missing out on at the moment.
