This book seems to suggest the Soulless one can regenerate indefinitely when they die:

So is the Soulless one a mortal?

Source:

"Then there are the poor slaves known as the Soul Shriven. Each is a mortal kidnapped from Mundus at the moment of death, his or her soul stolen by Molag Bal for some unthinkable purpose, and given in exchange the vestige that enables him or her to form a counterfeit body here in Coldharbour. But they are not native to Oblivion, so a Soul Shriven's body is a sad imitation of the body worn in life, suffering rapid wear and decay until it dies—a death that is no liberation, for its vestige only forms a body once again, over and over, ad infinitum...

Such are the facts. What follows is speculation, born of conversations with the Sojourner during his infrequent and unpredictable visits. His theory is that the Soul Shriven's bodies are flawed because they have lost the focusing principle of their Anuic souls, so their vestiges are imperfect patterns. I concurred that this was likely, and then proposed the theoretical possibility of a Soul Shriven who, despite having lost his or her soul, possessed some other intrinsic Anuic aspect. This shall-we-say "paragon" Soul Shriven would form an unflawed body in Coldharbour that was a perfect duplicate of the body worn in Mundus. In fact, if this paragon bore a sufficiently high Anuic valence, upon contact with Padomaic creatia its body would form almost instantaneously.

The Sojourner scoffed at my theory, but seemed taken with the idea nonetheless. He went on to speculate that if such a thing were possible, it would probably occur in a situation where the Mundus was in existential jeopardy. In that case the Heart of Nirn would spontaneously generate such "paragon" individuals as a way of defending itself from destruction, in a manner analogous to the way the mortal body fights off infection."

I find it interesting. Using both lore(ish) and through the game's story, ZOS has basically explained exactly why/how your character never really dies.

This book seems to suggest the Soulless one can regenerate indefinitely when they die:

Soul Gems and Wayshrines make our characters Immortal

Could you imagine playing this game as DiD? I shudder at the thought.....

    Back on Topic:

Since the souls are taken at death, the mystery is, how did Molag Bal steal the Vestige's Soul? Some would say that a soulless one is essentially a zombie, a husk that stumbles around aimlessly without conscious thought as the Soul is the source of thought. Then there are others that say that thought is the source of the soul. It's the Chicken and Egg argument all over again.

The question is, can you kill someone who has no soul? Perhaps that is why we can resurrect at all. But, since we get our soul back at some point in the game, and then continue on from there in adventures that can still kill us, and get resurrected at will, then perhaps the Vestige is now one who can not lose their soul at death. And that is why they are immortal.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Soul Gems contain Anuic souls, so that is the Catalyst for the Padomaic creatia the player is made out of to regenerate. And the Wayshrines may be blessed with Anuic energy? Although that would also mean that we should have been able to renegenerate without gems once we acquired our Soul back. Hm.

The Vestige isn't a soul-shriven, the soul-shriven are under Molag Bal's control. The fact you have free will implies you are different.

My guess would be that if you died (really died, not counting in game mechanics) your body would die, and your mind would awaken in the soul gem with your soul.

The Vestige is a Soul shriven. You body died on Nirn, Molag Bal took your soul and created a Creatia body for you in Coldharbour.

As the text implies, the "Paragon" soul shriven would create a perfect body, and not the imperfect one other Soul shriven has.

Yup, this pretty much explains exactly why we, as players, can always come back from the dead, over and over. The only real question is why we come back at wayshrines. My theory is that the wayshrines are spots where at some point in time people have tapped directly into padomaic creatia in order to allow the teleportation from one to another, and thus the soulless one's body reforms at the nearest one. In a similar fashion, the soul held in a soul gem can be used as the impetus power to form a new body.

I remember reading that book in CH and thought it was an awesome read and fit into lore well.
