Anyone ever made it across? The Gods know I tried, but there was some invisible barrier blocking the way two thirds through.

I did during early PTS. /bug reported it in-game and they added some invisible barrier to the bridge.

Back then, you could jump on top of the rope on the right hand side and just run across.

PS: The island was empty, nothing there ...
PPS: If you jump off the cliff to the right next to the post, there's a ledge with a treasure chest on it.

I doubt i was the only one reporting it. The whole purpose of the PTS was to report bugs like this.

it's basically just a landmark, unless they intend to make something out of it on future updates.
