Do AWAY with player names

Since the /tell function in this game is terrible....Is there any way to have all players use their @'name' in all chat messages? Due to the system not being very comprehensive, you are unable to /whisper name of many players... or if you happen to swap out characters and you dont get their @name it is near next to impossible to communicate with another player unless you send them ingame mail and hope they recieve the message quickly.

So... You want to be able to send a /tell to somebody who you're not friends with (otherwise you'd have their @accountname) to ensure that you can pester them whenever you wish. Even though they choose not to share that information with you. That's just wrong on so many levels.

If you want to message somebody in game, with the expectation that they will get the message right away, then friend them. Don't look for a mechanic that at least gives SOME form of anonymity when they want it.

There is no anonymity in this game. Your @playername is the only identity that matters. It has always been that way and that will never change.

In just about every way possible, @playername is more important than vestige name.

If a character chooses not to share their player name, then yes, there is some anonymity. Most would argue that it's not enough. So somebody looking towards removing even that small bit, is asking for A LOT.

Incidentally, and I'm loath to say this... There IS a way to get a character's player name without having to friend them or be in the same guild. I've /bug'd it in game a few times. But it's yet to be addressed/fixed.

Ha, as if other players didn't realize by now that the ignore system is based on account names not player names. I mean the whole @ next to each name was a dead giveway. Good job wasting ZoS' time with reports for functions that are working as intended though.

That's all on you for forgetting to take note. And even then, if you didn't take the time to take note of their character name, what use would their player name be to you? Because obviously you wouldn't have had that either.

There is no privacy with the @ in the name... the @ is very easily obtainable, and its a nuisance to have to deal with. If people want their @ kept a secret, then ESO should have thought of a better /whisper system that utilizes a players name rather than their @ name... But with how it is currently set up, and if ESO plans to keep the messaging system the way it is, they need to start changing all players name in chat dialoge to reflect the @ name, because it is very annoying...The character name is more secretive and harder to whisper than an @ name.

I'm sorry, did I misunderstand the problem?

You keep forgetting to get the players' account names before switching characters. If you stop forgetting, there's no more problem. ZO doesn't need to adjust the game to make up for your personal attention span issues.

So basically (according to all of your posts in this thread) you're saying that you want a way for ESO to magically determine who you're trying to message. By your own example, you forgot to take note of the person with whom you were corresponding. What difference would it make whether you forgot the character name or account name?

Still doesn't make sense. If you're logged in, and chatting with "Krull the Destroyer', then log out and back in with an alt, you can still message" Krull the Destroyer". In fact, any character in game can.

Actually, you're mistaken. The only instance where you can't message a character directly in that instance is when it's cross-faction chat. If they're the same faction, there's no problem.

Yes it is the case. You don't have to be friends or a guild mate to message anybody. Earlier you also specifically mentioned forgetting to note who it was you were talking to. Your whole issue comes down to the simple matter of not writing down a name. Whether it was their character name, or their account name, you forgot to note it. That simple. Appending every player's account name to their character name in chat doesn't mean squat if you don't even take the time to make a note of it.

I wonder about something else. Security. My account is protected by BOTH my password and my account name. Giving away half of the equation seems like a very poor decision.

Let me give you an example. When you log, you are using "secure http". Encrypted http. If someone gets that info (username, password) you send, by some way, must spend a lot of computer time to crack that encryption. Has anyone calculated how much easier is to decrypt something, when you actually know part of the encrypted data?

The whole thing with our account names, seems very amateurish approach.

I can kind of see a point, but I think it's fine as it is.

I have 11 Alts, 8 on NA 3 on EU with a guild on each. I had a couple of guild requests for trait equipment but the traits were on equipment by a different Alt. I failed to record their @ and switched Alts then realised I didn't know who to send it to. I asked in guild but I guess they'd gone offline or something. Instead I shrugged and logged into the Alt I'd been playing and trained the trait.

That, I see as a failure of communications between myself and my Guild Mate. No need to fix the system,
Oooh look, lot's of Butterflies! Wait! Butterflies? Get out of here Sheo, stop bugging me!

This horse is beaten, dead, and buried.

There is no security issue with handing out your @account name in ESO. Use it for your main vestiges name. Tattoo it on your forehead.

Account names are intended to be how you are identified, and this is how ESO uses them. This is how forums use them. This is how your email provider uses them. In hundreds of places, your account name is your identity and anyone who wants to know it, can know it.

So, unless you are one of those people who carefully burn nail clippings and hair trimmings, pick a decent and secure password that is unique to ESO and you have nothing to worry about.

This character I was messaging was not cross faction...we were both in stonefalls speaking. As soon as i swapped charcters it would not let me message him, so i had to send him an in-game e-mail to message me at me @ name. Either way, the private messaging system needs fixing.
