Halfmer- A discussion on half races.

StormbrookThunderb
I am wondering about half-mer? When/where/what/why can we figure about these. A compilation in this forum and what needs to be expanded within the game? How many races are technically in the game? (Playable is 13) But how many could they expand on? They talk about ALlyssians etc.

Bretons are half elf half imperial but the king and duke were married to red guards.

Orcs and dwarves are both elves in actuality. It's just orcs are somehow like dark elves and corrupted in a different manner. It would be cool if they brought back the dwarves (only for them to become extinct) or have us at minimum go back in time. The dwarves were originally promised to be in the game but they took a shortcut and went up 200 years with a quests.

Resources I've found.

Maybe you clicked past this book while raiding shelves for skill points.

Pretty clearly explains the "half-race" scenario.

Re: Orcs, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Orc all you could ask for is here.

Re: Bretons, the interbreeding that led to their "half-elf" status occurred thousands of years ago and solidified them into their own race not too long after, especially since the initial half-breeds were only permitted to breed with the other humans. That, again, is covered in a book in-game. http://www.imperial-library.info/content/bretons-mongrels-or-paragons

The Dwarves wouldn't be half as interesting if you actually interacted with them, btw. Their society works best as an incomprehensible echo of the past.

Check out Notes on Racial Phylogeny. In short, children are almost always the same race as the mother, "... though some traces of the father's race may also be present." Half-breeds like the Bretons take centuries of interbreeding to come about, and even then, they're more men than mer by a wide margin, indicating the situation was typically Direnni men taking their female servants as mistresses.

    10 playable races is good
and as said halfbreeds usually take after the mother
there are alot more races in lore that could make their apperance as npc's, like the Imga (who should have been in valenwood already) the Lilmothiit, all Akaviri races, ... + plus all the npc races that already introduced in this and other ES games (Maomer, Falmer, Kothringi,...)
more as enough lore to go around

I'm just wondering how they could add more races into the game.
By introducing some of the existing races that fit into the time period, but have never been shown in any TES game before.
    http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Races

Half-breeds won't work because like others already said, the children are always the race of the mother. They can inherit minor traits from the father, but nothing that would make them a separate race. Bretons aren't your traditional half-elves, they are a result of centuries of interbreeding when those minor traits accumulated over generations and eventually their blood was so mixed they weren't one or the other anymore. Though they are still considered more human than elven.

"We read fantasy to find the colors again, I think. To taste strong spices and hear the songs the sirens sang. There is something old and true in fantasy that speaks to something deep within us, to the child who dreamt that one day he would hunt the forests of the night, and feast beneath the hollow hills, and find a love to last forever somewhere south of Oz and north of Shangri-La."

Kothringi or what is left of their people are already in game. Not playable of course. I would not expect other races to be playable we already have 10 we can be and well Bretons are already there to represent a more true hybrid situation.

Half-Mer/Beast aren't really possible in the ES universe after one.. Uhh. Child? :\

Because like said above two or three times the offspring usually takes after the mother, so in an Altmer Khajiit couple where the Altmer is the female the offspring would still be Altmer. Maybe with the hair color and eye color of the Khajiiti father but thats about it. Also like said above, Bretons took thousands of years to come about and are really the only half/half race around. If your mother was orc and your father was argonian, you'd be orc. Same goes for every other race we know about so far, so playing as a half race is impossibru.

If you want other playable races though, there are still possible ones. Akaviri men, Kothringi, Maormer, and the list goes on. (Not really) :#

While it is tangential to this while races don't easily hybrid it appears that vampirism does have a stronger effect on the child from what we saw of that orc champion in oblivion.

Though that opens a whole new kettle about what the rules are for vampires having children that aren't via biting their neck.

I cant find anything where they state that. I dont think they would explore that huge theme in their lore in eso. Id be sad if in the case of Bethesda deciding they were going to reveal the fate of dwemer, it didnt get a game in the main series to itself

Having sex with them does not mean they automatically can have kids. Just saying. I am sure if the different races wanted they can all have sex with races other then their own. How or what not is not the relevant part in this instance it is more whether children can come from such a union. I suspect while it might be possible some pairings may have difficulty actually producing viable offspring. After all Argonians have eggs for example. Still this is a fantasy world so who is to say?

I do not think hybrid races is really the way to go. Nor do I think we really need more choices. Think of it this way there would almost certainly have to be one new race per alliance if they added them with all of their own racials and so on a lot of work for something that is fairly cosmetic when you get right down to it. Further most of the other races that have been mentioned either by this time have A). gone the way of the dodo or are pretty close to it (kothringi dwemer ect) or, B). are not native to this continent (those from Akavir , sloads, ect)

If you mean draugr, they're not a race, but rather a type of undead; drugar came up with no results on UESP.
