ZOS forgets the accountname every time there is a patch. 1.3 is gonna be fun, again, I guess.

So, can we all look forward to the same old bug by ZOS that forgets the accountname every time there is a patch?

I really don't worry about the regular bugs...
Regular bugs happen, and get ironed out.
Eventually.
Frequently.

This is about the add-ons.

Yep, I don't need add-ons to play.
But add-ons are much of the reason the game is worth the bother (to me), as without them the game is beautiful but annoyingly tedious. With all the creaturecomforts that ZOS left out for the add-on devs to insert, some of the player base just doesn't think the game is all that on it's own in barebones GUI format.

ZOS left out stuff, and invited the add-on community to come join in.
They made it possible to add-in add-on enhancements.
They did that by choice, and they made it known.
And ZOS shoots holes in the bottom of the add-on boat every update.

We'll see whats going to happen, sure, but I'm not expecting ZOS to be getting another 6 month sub from me if 1.3 breaks the add-ons I have left, and runs as many add-on devs away as the 1.2.X code did.

For every cute chick out there, there's some guy who's the latest in a string who is just tired of putting up with the ****.
This is similar.

Most of my diehard rabid ESO friends bailed a while ago.
When the time comes:
No, you can't haz my stuffs.
No.
Just, No.

Every time an MMO is updated, add-ons have at least a day or two of being broken because those developers have to update their software.

Holding ZO responsible for add-ons breaking is ridiculous. Learn how the system works before you complain about it.

As pointed out above, it is the addon developer's responsibility to ensure their addons work. Are you suggesting there should be no patches, because they mean you have to update your addons? As for the game forgetting the account name every patch, well it doesn't happen to me, perhaps one of your addons is responsible.

I have a whole string of add-ons that no longer work because the devs got tired of being blindsided.

    It's my subscription money.
I can spend or withhold it for any reason I see fit.
ZOS encouraging add-on devs to enhance the game, and then hamstringing the add-ons through lack of cooperation by coordinating advance notice to the add-on support community reduces my enjoyment of the game.

You don't have to agree with me.
You can enjoy the game any way you see fit, and I honestly hope you enjoy it for a very long time.

But my enjoyment is predicated on the environment that the add-ons enhanced.
As such, you'll be financing future development with monies from other players, not including me.

    Live long, and prosper.

    1. The add-on developers getting tired of the game is not ZO's issue. They can't please everyone. Get new add-ons or learn to live without ones that aren't being updated.
    2. You can spend (or not spend) your money however you see fit. However, when you make factually inaccurate statements on the forums, that's not actually a valid comeback.
    3. ZO can update the game however they like. The PTS is open, and changes from the PTS version of an update to the live version are usually pretty minimal. But, as mentioned, any MMO has these issues. Updates always break add-ons. Period.

I appreciate that your enjoyment is predicated on using add-ons. They aren't necessary, so that's your problem, not ZO's. Stop projecting.

It appears that for this update (by which I mean 1.3) ZoS has released the API updates to the add-on community.

You can find this info on a sticky in the add-on forum.

Hopefully, this means that the devs that have the time to update will be able to get those updates released as ZoS is patching.

Of course, since the add-on devs do this in their spare time, I'm willing to wait it out.

While I don't NEED add-ons to play the game, my experience playing is greatly enhanced by the ones that I use. Note that I said "my experience is enhanced". If you find your experience isn't, then that is just peachy keen with me, too.

There are no game out there that will not break some addons on new patches. ZOS has nothing to do with it and I don't see why they should care. Wait a few days for an update on the addons no longer working.

Through all the addons in different MMO's that I've played I've yet to comprehend why they aren't built into the UI within 30-60 days.

If 775k ppl play this and 250k-300k use said addon then just implement it as an optional feature.

I do not and will not use any addons but I used quite a few during WoW and DAoC. I'm trying to prepare myself for the console and have enjoyed the non MMORPG feel of no addons, silly bars and grids. Etc.

To each it's on but again it's odd that many addons aren't added by default but then allowed. The game becomes divided because certain groups gain advantages from specific addons that others don't have.

Yes I know anyone can get them but you'd be surprised at how many ppl who have no clue how to successfully install and update addons.

It's something that needs to be built on pts. Tested by a developer and then submitted to the devs to implement for all.

Just my opinions from a diff point of view. Addons dev would also be responsible for updating their addons for each patch as it stands but vs going to an external site to download they should automatically be in the build and any updated addon should just be selected in the addons interface.

This would establish a better integration and even the playing field.

I have no idea when this thread suddenly changed to one where we question why Add-Ons exist. Please get back on-topic here.

The OP is talking solely about ZeniMax Online Studios' practices with the Add-Ons in which, as @Arthur_Spoonfondle‌ stated, it falls into the Add-On Developers' hands to update their add-ons with the patch and make sure that everything is working correctly. As @sylviermoone‌ then stated, yes, ZeniMax has made the necessary changes to the API to allow developers extra time to ensure their add-ons will work with the update and release said update for their add-on in a shorter expanse of time.

However, once again, it falls on the Add-On Developer's hands to make sure everything is up-to-date and working correctly, otherwise the add-on could break because of new functionality that is added to the game. It's a regular process for your standard MMO or Online RPG that allows the use of add-ons or even translation patches from outside sources to have updates that cause breaks in coding for existing software. Why? Because that's unfortunately just the way that major updates like these work, to keep things on this thread in English and avoid getting into programming lingo.

This is coming from my own personal experience previously as someone who worked hand-in-hand with a team of English translators for the Japanese RPG, Phantasy Star Online 2. We have a separate client that we allow users to download and installs our translation patches from (in this case, it does much like what Minion does, for instance), then it applies that over what context you see in-game (Japanese characters, in the instance of PSO2). It's a very extremely delicate process that can easily have its English text in-game converted back to Japanese characters if there is an issue with establishing a link to the existing content or the server when major content updates are released (not so much when minor content updates release). It's frequent that these changes in-game do break some lines of coding and our programmer has to go back and take a look into it to get it up-to-date again.

Just like here, though, SEGA recognized the team's efforts and made it easier for us to go in and run our updates alongside their content updates that way people don't have to wait as long on them. In this case, hopefully it means that most add-ons will be ready to go when Update 3 launches for ESO as ZeniMax is now employing similar efforts.

Give it time. This is hardly something that falls as ZOS' fault as it's really just amateur add-on developers coming into the game and expecting that the add-ons they have 'won't' break. Other developers that have been around much longer you can separate from the bunch because they're both quick to update their add-ons as well as not make any fuss about it. It's why you see so many newer add-on developers give up after the first few months of developing (hence resulting in a larger number of add-ons that no longer work). In this case, 1.2.X was the update that caused these developers to stop working on them because it had a change in coding, which ZeniMax is fixing in 1.3.X.

Hopefully, this update's API changes will have some of them return so that they can continue honing their experiences with programming and developing their add-ons.

So, I've never actually done this, and as a result I lost my entire node history from my harvest map after 1.2. As every node on the map was a location that I personally found and harvested across 5 chars, this was.....well let's just say sad.

I would presume that backing them up is merely copying the folder to another location (such as desktop) so that should something bad happen, I can just pop the old one back in place?

Also, to address the first question in you first post to this thread...all threads that in any way discuss add-ons will always draw the trolls that hate them.

And thus, any thread discussing add-ons will always degenrate into a...discussion....on whether or not add-ons are cheating or not.

(They aren't, and a great many add-on users use add-ons to get vital information in the game that really should just be included as a option in the standard UI).

    No problem, @sylviermoone‌ !

I agree wholeheartedly. I use add-ons solely for enhancing my experience in-game. Point blank is that, if ZeniMax Online Studios allows them to exist and for users to modify particular content, it's obvious that it is anything but cheating and just another way of gathering and taking in information in-game to improve your overall experience. ZeniMax understands that not everyone likes the barebone UI that most TES fans enjoy, but they also understand how difficult a proposition it would be to cater to all types of MMO fans out there in what they desire out of the UX.

For me, I prefer the barebones UI itself, but I made a few modifications with add-ons like Research Assistant, AI Research Grid, and Wykkyd's Framework to help me keep up with researching and avoid making extra steps into keeping tabs on everything. None of it gets in the way of the rather minimalist approach to the UI design that I prefer to have.

There are those that prefer and feel comfortable knowing the numerical side of the equation: how much DPS/HPS they do/absorb, how much HP an enemy has before taking it on, what buffs/debuffs they are currently affected by, etc. It's great that add-ons like those are there because it gives users like them those additional bonuses of having that information available to them. In no way can I see how that gives them an upper-hand in any combat situation because those people like myself rely more on animations and visual cues to know what we are or aren't affected by; add-ons just allow for a different method of displaying such information.

Fortunately, a lot of add on developers are on the PTS, so they have the updated addons ready on the same day the patch goes live to the public.

However, I have never played a game where some mods were not broken by a patch, it goes with the territory of using mods. Nice thing is, Add Ons do not change the game saves like in Skyrim or Oblivion, so the worst thing that happens is you don't get to use an add on for a day or three while the mod developer is updating things. With Skyrim, I was holding off playing the game until the mods I used that needed updates were updated.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
