Can you get to VR10...

...by doing just the VR story quests?
That is, is there enough VR XP available by just doing the main faction storylines to reach VR10 if that's all I do, or do I have to do all the side-quests and other crap as well?

Well the best I can say is that I'm currently in rivenspire on my 3rd faction which means I have two more zones to go and I'm 75% into VR 8. So I'm assuming yes you have to do the other crap.

you will have to do side quests, all of them. world bosses and dolmens too really. Or just camp at thief spawn for a few days and skip all that pesky questing.

I found that I had to do all the side quests, dungeons, dolmens, (except public and group dungeons) in order to reach the next Vet Rank just before going to the next zone. This is why I lot of players go to Craglorn to grind experience.

Yepp, you'll have to do the crap. A lot of crap, in fact.

Or, you just download the PTS client and get a VR12 template.
