Tanking trials

I stepped into my first trial last night as tank and would like to ask if I need to break the mindset of what I feel like a traditional tank should be? I just don't feel like the heavy armor, sword and shield brute that a tank normally is.
I know people say if you aren't wearing a robe and carrying a stick your doing it wrong but I guess I prefer to be stubborn and hope that is fixed (sooner rather than later). So my question is, other than using armor/SP mitigating skills and blocking is there any thing else I can do for support? (I did not die so that wasn't an issue)
I guess the short version is that I feel like I'm not really contributing as a tank, I'll keep researching but any advice will help too.
