New spell system.

Spellcrafting with Nicke Konkle
You are going to be able to find and combine various spell effects in the game and create new abilities you can put on your hotbar.

It is a bound system that is not completely unbalancing the game.

It might be something you can only do after you have completed the Mage Guild quest line.

Mage Guild discover new ancient doorways and found new ways to organize magic.
A lot of exploration in this system, you get a spell that summon a ball you have to chase to find the various ancient doorways located all over the world.
Inside the doorways you will find stone tablets. Some are whole, some are broken into pieces and scattered all over the world.

Using an interactive UI, similar to lockpicking, you will be using charcoal and paper on the tablet to recreate the spell and collect it.Once you collected the spell, you throw them into a book of all the spells you have collected.

Once you collected the spells, you want to recreate the tablets you found in order to learn that spell. First thing you do is to collect the base effect of the spell using the method described above. You can then customize it by using different focus (morphs).
Base, Ultimate, Enduring, Reduce Cost, Ritual, AoE.

If you put the AoE focus on Lighting Bolt you will create a chain lightning spell. If you put the enduring focus on a flame antronach it will become a permanent pet. You can use the ultimate to make the spells into ultimates.

The better stone you use for the tablets to create the spells, the more powerful and expensive the spell will be. Tablets can be traded with other players. Once the tablet is consumed, it will grant you the permanent ability.

In summary, you explore the world to collect base spells and then customize it with the six different focus and different stones for the tablets.

This excites me and scares me at the same time.

We were forced to have classes, because they were afraid we would all be cookie cutter classes.

Now we can make our own spells, even our own Ultimates.

I love the concept they are trying to do, but I can already hear the screams of nerfing from a mile away.

Please let this system work! :D

*crosses fingers*

P.S. Maybe if they can pull this off, they might be able to do away with classes. ;)

    I am soooo looking forward to my templar summoning my beloved flame ach. This aspect is something to really look forward to. The justice system was like ehhh...it might be ok....but spellcrafting and some of the new armors was a nice breath of life. NOw i wasn't too clear if you can craft different motif glass armors though.

    I'd be happy if i could create a single target heal spell that I can actually aim/target.

    Or for giggles a AOE confusion spell that makes the affected move in a random direction for 6 secs.

    I'm excited about this as well and wish the team luck with it. I'm guessing it will take a couple updates to get it balanced correctly though, which is fine. We should all probably realize it won't come out of the gate in perfect harmony with everything else and try to keep our composure when it goes live in PvP.

    After just watching that segment from Quakecon, I am in love with the new system... Having created spell mods for Skyrim like unlock for alteration skill, I gotta say this system is far more dynamic and flexible than what we saw in Skyrim... Can't wait!!!

    As long as I can be a frosty tank with them that's all I care. So disappointed at first that in order to use elemental spells you had to wield a Destruction staff. So if this turns out like I hope it does, I'll be a happy Khajiit indeed.

    The way that I understood it is that spells are going to be consumables and can be slotted using the Q-wheel or something similar. My main concern in the balance aspect of it but I really, really like the idea nontheless, and I am looking forward to the additional longevity it will add to the game.

    The tome used to learn it will be consumable. The spell itself will be an active ability just like class abilities. He even said you could have your whole bar full of spellcrafted abilities which will allow for tremendous character customization and development.

    I have several reasons that make me scared of this system.
    1. that some spells are OP to others and everyone starts using them resulting in the same builds
    2. That it is magica build and everyone runs around in light armor again
    3. that the areas that you find the spells are not solo instances but with other people resulting in respawn times of spells and people stealing it away right in front of you ( like harvest nodes, just that they are rarer than nodes), resulting in frustration.
    4. Lastly that the price of the best and hardest to get spells will be an absolute rip off like it happened with motifs. i personally would prefer it to be bound. It does make sense immersion wise, you have found the plate and learned the spell, you can now change the spells properties and make a new one, how would it make sense that you can give this to another player and he is able to learn it instantly, without knowing the basics.

    Also it would be interesting to know if spellcrafting is a leveled crafting discipline such as enchanting etc.

    Given the trend Zenimax seems to have in regards to this kind of content, which is to say "Make it fast, release it, and maybe fix all the bugs (if we really have to) later" I'd agree with this estimation. The word is out there, people are excited about it, so it will likely become another one of those features that gets added before properly tested and fixed to an extent that it doesn't become either extremely OP or too broken to use.

    Don't get me wrong, I'm optimistic about it, but I'm also a realist and Zenimax has yet to impress me in any way when it comes to the choice between "release as is so we can get our money now" or "at least try to fix it first so players get their money's worth". Zenimax is not charging veteran players for added content like this, but you can bet that they will be advertising this new unique spell system as soon as it is released when they advertise the game for the sake of drawing in new customers. Naturally, when they advertise it they will make it sound like a fun, unique spell system for an mmo, and while I agree that is it will be once properly adjusted, they will fail to mention that the system has only recently been added, is still being balanced, and (because it will) still has issues.

    Sounds kind of familar, doesn't it? They advertise for the game, describing it as this amazingly new, groundbreaking mmo and yet there are still so many bugs in it that have existed since beta that a lot of people still feel like they're playing the beta. They are adding new content that just as many believe should have already been released in the beta, but you won't find any mention of this in any of their advertisements because that would be bad marketing.

    I can't wait to see how much more OP the magetanks become in pve or DK become in pvp once they have the ability to make their own spells. I jest of course, because I don't play a magetank or DK.

    This is what Camelot Unchained are doing to their spell system, all sounds good but something like this should have been in from the start.
    Patch 1.2.3 nerfed the game....
    Zergballing wrecked pvp......

    Now waiting for Camelot Unchained!!

    Single Target healing:
    That is the kind of power that would just not work in a Action Combat MMO.
    In a tab targetting MMO those are fine and dandy. But having spells that autotarget the most needy character (as is now) or work AoE is just plain the better way for a game like this.

    NWO tried it single target healing, and those are annoyingly hard to target.
    Wildstar avoided it totally using thier telegraph/aoe system.
    ESO avoids it totally, using aoe/target most needy.

    The Aoe Confusion:
    That one is called "Fear" from Nightblade.

    Possibly interesting trivia in this context. The global table contains a interesting weapon type next to those we know already:
    WEAPONTYPE_AXE = 1
    WEAPONTYPE_BOW = 8
    WEAPONTYPE_DAGGER = 11
    WEAPONTYPE_FIRE_STAFF = 12
    WEAPONTYPE_FROST_STAFF = 13
    WEAPONTYPE_HAMMER = 2
    WEAPONTYPE_HEALING_STAFF = 9
    WEAPONTYPE_LIGHTNING_STAFF = 15
    WEAPONTYPE_NONE = 0
    WEAPONTYPE_PROP = 7
    WEAPONTYPE_RUNE = 10
    WEAPONTYPE_SHIELD = 14
    WEAPONTYPE_SWORD = 3
    WEAPONTYPE_TWO_HANDED_AXE = 5
    WEAPONTYPE_TWO_HANDED_HAMMER = 6
    WEAPONTYPE_TWO_HANDED_SWORD = 4

    Of course this could also just be some leftovers from pre beta. Not sure if this was added and when with wich patch.
