Looking at the dev logs, they did review this, but steam wants 30% of the box sale price for every game linked to their system. Doing this would cost ESO millions.

I would pay that 30% they would want

Not how I play games and I avoid the whole Steam overlay thing like the plague. However, if some people want to indulge in it maybe they should be given the ability to do so. (Except for MMOs I prefer single player games on the computer - board games and pen and paper games where I am in the same room for "multiplayer games". Everybody should be entitled to their own style.)

Check my steam profile and look what i grinded for Skyrim....got all trading cards, achievements, backrounds, icons etc....

"add non steam game to steam" does not apply that.....

See, the problem with that argument is that the service Steam would provide is not actually free after you consider we're going to buy all of the DLC from Steam. Speaking like Valve is not going to get anything out of it is a misnomer.

I am in total agreement. Generally, if a game is not available through Steam, I don't even consider purchasing it. This is only because it makes it super easy to manage all of my owned games from a single location. If I had know that ESO would have been coming to Steam eventually, but without the ability to merge existing accounts, then I never would have pre-purchased it.

There should be no fee to use the system. STEAM is about it's community and adding the existing ESO player base does NOTHING BUT HELP THEM. STEAM is losing nothing if they allow the free codes to transfer existing accounts. They gain more people using their service, more chances for their ads to be seen.

I'm guessing this is an issue with steam and not eso. If you sell a game on steam I bet steam gets some profits and are not willing to make the game free. Has seriously no one thought of this yet?

cant stand steam. although its one of the better info aggregate drm monsters out there its still bloated and full of itself. also, they love to release games that dont work or have patches and its buyer beware. I have 20 unplayable games (bought on those impulse sales) that will never work. meanwhile, on other sites like gog, they not only work but are supported.

so yah, screw steam. I have my one or two games that I will hang onto thru them and with their permission (sarcasm mode) play them.. but im done with them for new content

Nerevarine has it right. I have never seen anybody WANT Steam before. This whole thing really surprises me. Every time a company releases a new game that requires Steam you see hundreds of posts asking not to have it. People are always looking for ways around using it. This whole demand to use it surprises the heck out of me.

Steam is the future dude, there's no REAL bloatware with it, most people complain that it uses 120 MB of RAM, but that's nothing in most modern computers.

If you still have 2 GB RAM i suggest you upgrade.

Also this game is always online anyway.

I came online to renew my subscription. I certainly won't now.

OF COURSE i prefer a Steam version! I want it to be on my Steam list. I feel like such a moron for buying the game this early.

The basic difference is that for Skyrim you HAD TO go through Steam to be able play it, with ESO-Steam you only get the overlay and achievements/cards, but still have access to the regular launcher as both (Steam and non-Steam version) require you to have a regular eso account.

To be forced to connect via Steam to play or having the option to are completely different.

I've seen this before, with games ranging from indies to EA blockbusters. People like having all their games in one place, without the need to run several different launchers. You don't see them ask for Steam because nowadays releasing popular games on Steam is usually a given. Why ask for something that's going to happen anyway? But not in ESO's case, hence the uproar. People asked about Steam support back in beta; even looking just at TES fans you have thousands of people who bought Skyrim on Steam (obviously, it was the only way) and expected the next TES game to be there too. Contrary to popular opinion, there's an enormous group of people who don't hate Steam and don't try to avoid it at all costs.

Boo hoo :'( . It's called marketing for a reason. They will make more off of Steam peddling their wares if people who use Steam see their friends playing it. Seriously they must have a budget for advertising and marketing. Do you honestly think Steam could charge 30% if it didn't work? Of course it does. Steam is incredibly popular. I have bought games because Steam recommended it or because I saw that my friends played it.They should want as many people as possible tied to the Steam network.

Yea I called tech support at one point during beta and asked why the game wasn't going to be released on steam. The operative game me this long spiel about how complex and hard that would be or something. How much extra coding it would take.

That should only include the number copies sold on Steam. Valve being able to charge for a product that was purchased prior to the game's availability on Steam would not necessarily be dictated by the contract. Moreover, Valve would be missing out on a great deal of potential money, perhaps even in DLC and cosmetic gear in the future, for this game by not allowing the current non-Steam users to use the same product. Having the launcher merely use Valve's proprietary system does include some cost, which could easily be paid by us subscribers. Zenimax could charge an extra one time fee to allow users to transfer to Steam.

Awesome points. I'm sad that someone like you Spottswoode, was not on the part of the TESO 'team' who should have been negotiating a workable arrangement for the Steam keys for TESO's existing subscriber base. Its too bad about this treatment of those who bought and subbed to the game in its early 'version' eh...

LMAO, everything in the world should be free, yeah, the hippies of the 60s are reborn in today's generation it seems.

Of COURSE there's a fee, it's in the purchase price of every game you buy from them (in their 30% cut from the vendors) and since you didn't but from them then where does your sense of entitlement come from that makes you think you and a right to use Steam's systems?
