Is 12-button mouse needed?

I play with a Razer Tartarus gamepad and a simple gaming mouse, I think two buttons on the side. I use the thumb thing on the gamepad to move around, keys on gamepad for skill use.

One of the best guys in my guild tho says I should get a 12-button mouse like Naga or Logitech if I really want to play at a high level (e.g. Veteran dungeon healing).

Is he right? I can see why such a contraption might be handy in a game like WoW, but in this game you only have 7 things on the bar--5 regular skills, ultimate and potion. Why would I need a mouse with that many buttons?

Thanks any opinions on this.

Completely unnecessary. A mouse with a few buttons is useful for things like dodging, but that's about it.

I use a 12 button and don't think I would go back. Though, if you're not using one now and are comfortable with the setup you have, IMHO there is no major reason to upgrade, you can do everything just as fast with keyboard as long as that is what you're used to. My wife tries to play ESO on my machine and gets too confused, too many buttons on my G19s and on my mouse that she cannot keep track, not to mention she cannot handle the eyefinity, but even with that I could never go back to a single screen again.

It's not necessary but it's very useful. Like others have said, it's hard to go back. I use a Naga. I keep ultimate at middle mouse. I have weapon swap and my abilities on the mouse. I also put auto run and sprint on the mouse to take strain off my left hand. I find it much easier to be mobile in combat by having the Naga.

I run with a naga and honestly (thank the lord) I really only use 8 buttons on it for this game. I originally got it for SWTOR and the 17 buttons were no where near enough but It is however very useful in every game I play and I cant imagine life without it now.

I've got a Mad Catz R.A.T. 3 for a mouse that is nice to switch between a few extra buttons. I have a Logitech G105 keyboard that also gives me 6 extra buttons and some macros. And then I have a Nostromo Speedpad n52 that I just can't get the feel for with ESO.

Really, just a simple gaming keyboard is all you'll really want, but it's not needed. An extra button or two on the mouse is helpful. Way better for weapon swapping.

The naga is the way to go. As others have said, not necessarily must but it does make things easier. I've personally gotten better since I got it.

I have a Razer Molten and use all of them ... I'm of the opinion that you can ALWAYS find a use for the extra buttons.

Use object, use player, auto-run, crouch, mount, use ultimate, quick slots, etc.

I use a Razer Naga Epic and Orbweaver gamepad. You don't have to use any particular equipment to do well, you just need to get really good at what you do use. Personally I couldn't go back to a regular mouse or one with less buttons. I use the Naga for 1-5 abilities, ultimate, 3 pots via addon (Greymind), autorun, etc. The Orbweaver is just kinda a bonus, but it's very comfortable to move with a directional pad instead of WASD, which used to cramp up my fingers after long sessions.

FYI I upgraded from a Nostromo to an Orbweaver and didn't like the Nostromo much, the d-pad was so uncomfortable I set it to control my music.

I can't play without my Naga, it's awesome, I've got pretty much everything except moving bound to a button on there, so weapon swapping is so fast, along with autowalk.

I'd rather take a comfortable mouse than a mouse with a dozen buttons.

Currently using Deathadder 2013 and yes, two thumb buttons are enough for me. Dodge and weapon swap, that's it for extras. The rest is controlled by the keyboard. It works in ESO and it works just as good in GW2 (which have even more skills available).

My suggestion to OP is to tell your friend that sorry, combat in this game is already stupid easy as it is, why make it even stupider?

It took me a while to get used to using my G600 with this game, but boy does it make a difference now. I have 15 abilities bound.
    Skills 1-5
    Ultimate
    Quick slot
    Weapon draw
    Interrupt
    Synergies
    Sprint
    Dodge
    Stealth
    Mount
    Weapon swap

I'm not even Sure there is anything left to bind, I have a spare button and then I could use my modified button to almost double it. It's great :)

I had 28 abilities bound to it in SWTOR.

The G600 was flipping uncomfortable to use at first and it took me about 2 months to get fully used to if and build up the muscle memory (I'm old). I did wish I bought the naga at first, but now I'm used to it, it's great.

While I totally agree, my naga is one of the most comfortable mice (do we also call a PC mouse mice?) I've owned.

Sure the keyboard can do it all, I just find I get far less hand fatigue using my mouse and G13

Of all MMOs I have played, you would need a naga the least for ESO.

The game I actually bought one for was SWTOR. That game has a ton of skills that you need to use in order to be good and even though I'm good with a keyboard playing a Juggernaut in PvP was nearly impossible without one due to amount of keybinds. I suppose it's possible if you are a professional korean starcraft player or something.

I use the Naga Hex and it works perfectly for ESO's combat system. I still have my Ultimate as 'R' on the keyboard so I can have weapon swap on my Hex + the 5 abilities for each bar. The only issue I have with the Naga line is the laser they use. If a single microscopic piece of dust gets near it the mouse goes all wonky. If a tiny hair gets near it it goes stupid mode. That can be a real pain mid fight, but it's also a minor complaint.

The man perk for using one of the 12 button mice in ESO is you don't have to take your figures off the movement keys to use an attack. This specifically comes in handy since movement (rolling out of the way, etc) is so important.

    It's great for Wildstar too.

12 is too much + they are all close together. This is good for 'real' mmorpg's. ESO is more an action-RPG with an MMORPG-PvP part :)

With only 5*2 skill hotbars and 'some' action-buttons It's sufficient if you get a 6-side button mouse, or the rat7 mmo.

The Naga with the 6 side buttons seems also fine, if you like them all in order. The mmo7 gives you more customibility and feels like a futuristic hand-console offering too much customibility. If you like macros get a Logitech 502, also a fine choice!

You don't need that. Most of those people probably abuse the macro functions to create chains of animation canceling and light attack weaving anyway.

I don't think 12 buttons are necessary for this game. 6 would be fine to take all hotbar skills off the keyboard, the rest is manageable. Though I like having dodge, interrupt and weapon swap on the mouse too. Whatever works for you.

Mine has 10 buttons total, a logitech G500 and I only really use about 8 of them...

but yes a gaming mouse definitely helps especially with dodging, weapon swapping, also most gaming mouses let you macro keystrokes to a single button, a very useful feature.

If you use any voip services like TS or mumble, assigning a button as your push-to-talk lets you keep all your fingers on your left hand where they need to be. makes it easier to talk with your team during combat
