Templar thinking of switching to sword and board

I've just hit VR4
Imperial, skills are 38/11/0, 7/7 light armor with all the passives.
How I made it to veteran level....
My main mob kill is Puncturing Sweeps, even pre VR nerf. It has served me well and gotten me far with very few deaths except when I stupidly try to take on some bosses/dolmens solo or too many mobs get agro on me and start hitting me. I made it to VR using mainly using a Resto staff and Puncturing Sweeps, spending everything on class abilities, resto, and light armor, with passives in all those as well. I would be the healer in dungeons too I do decent at healing I am told. After reaching VR, I got a Destro Staff and concentrated on getting that to max, and with the morphed destructive touch to destructive clench I use that on a lot of bosses and trolls when I have one on one encounters, the knock back is far better and less expensive than the piercing javelin and it's just plain fun watching them fly though the air rather than seeing them get pierced to the ground.

I am thinking of going with a sword board and re doing my skills and skill points 1. because being Imperial gets better passives using sword and board and 2. Well I am just getting tired of spamming my puncturing sweep, sure I use and play around with a lot of other class, and staff skills on my bar, but the far effective of them all is the puncturing sweeps, I can wear down most bosses before I run out of majika. I feel like I can make it to end game just fine with this build too for any that are thinking of going more majika based. But my question is how do you sword and board guys that have made it to my level or beyond have your skills and skill points distributed? Is it a must to switch to heavy armor? Any advise is welcome.

    1. You need to use 2H (Carve for AoE) or DW if you plan to utilise the Imperial passives.
    2. That is our only DPS if we go for close combat. Bitting jabs is useless now imho.

I agree with being tired of spamming puncturing sweep. Its so effective that I just end up ignoring other spells, but to be honest I have always hated that animation and bam bam BAM sound. I also have an imperial alt that I am leveling up with s/b with heavy mostly, but its very young so could use tips.

Get restoration staff as secondary weapon with magicka return glyph and you wont run out of magicka. In solo PvE at least :(

I leveled from VR6-12 with sword and board. But that was mainly because I wanted to max the skill line for tanking and PvP later on. Would probably have been faster with 2 staffs for trash packs.

I used Puncturing Sweep, Blazing Spear, Empowering Sweep over and over. Not to exiting, I know.

From Sword and Board I only used Invasion. Rest stamina for blocking and Immovable. But this was pre-nerf when you pretty much died in PvE if one enemy managed to knock you down or land a cc, than the other 2-3 would rip your body in a few milliseconds.

You can stop using sweeps any time you want with any weapon you want.

I haven't used it since like 15. Teh question is what you want to accomplish with your char.

I specced out S&B tank, and a secondary 2H build (both wearing heavy).

Made it to VR 12 through old VR content

S+B is good for not getting dead for 3 mobs, but it and its passives are not enough all by itself to do well vs. 4+ mobs. You need sta to block a lot and sta cost reduction jewlery helps a lot. I'd also recommend Hist armor set for tanking. 20% chance to dodge while blocking is awesome vs. lots of mobs.

I was in a pub dungeon (VR9) this morning and hooked up with 3 other people to et bosses for acheivements. DK offered to tank. Pulled out S+B and got dead almost instantly on first set of baddies (zeroes out his sta blocking in 4 secs than bought it before anyone could heal him.. Both of us are VR 12.

I soloed the group with my sta regen buff, and ground heal, while throwing blazing spear as my only DPS putside of a few weapon swings once a lot of them were dead.. (because my DPS is meh in full tank mode usually)

Right now I've got resto staff/sword and board. Can heal, tank, and do pretty good dps. Have to say I'm loving the sword and board with templar

I cycle Solar Barrage with Reflective Light (with former making all three latter hits stronger). If you want to make use of sword actually, pick also Blinding Flashes.

So I've been running around with sword and board getting it leveled up. Slowly but surely. But with no stamina in my pool, it's not all that helpful. Well I guess it does help beef up my armor some. Having fun making the adjustment, but slow going.

That's pretty much what I have been doing as well, each quest I switch bars to get the exp in sword and board. How is your skills distributed M/H/S? What kind of armor do you wear?

I made it to VR8 as a 2H Templar using only 2H weapon skills except for Blazing Shield. Heavy Armor, split Health and Stamina for points. Works amazingly well.

You missed out then, Defensive Stance (morph of Defensive Posture) is the one of the hidden gems in this game.
