My spells don't do anything?

For the last couple of days, I've been unable to use direct damage spells in combat, and I was wondering if anyone else was having this issue.
I forget the exact names of them, but I've been using the lightning spell and crystal blast. Until recently they worked fine, but now they play the Animation and do no damage. The lightning spell mainly only plays the first half (where the lightning leaves your hand) and not the bit where it hits the enemy. The crystal blast seems to miss the enemy most of the time, but even when it hits, it does no damage. I had always thought they were both automatic hit spells, once you'd started casting.
In addition, my heavy attacks (Restoration staff) often just cut out at the beginning of the animation, and the attack stops.
I've just died on the same creature three times in a row because I couldn't attack, and it's quite frustrating.
I'm lvl 22, and the enemies are lvl 35ish. Does this make a difference?
My healing spell and daedra summons seem to work fine, but they're not enough to kill everything for me!
I wanna be able to fight back! :-(

Zebug✭✭✭why are you fighting level 35 stuff at 22? You skipped A TON of content.
I don't know if that is the reason why, but an easy way to trouble shoot that is to go to a zone of your level and attack something, if you kill it then there is your answer....Edited by Zebug on July 7, 2014 7:40PM1 -

Don't worry, I intend to go back and do it all! I've done 100 quests in stonefalls, and none (well... 3) in any of the other zones. But I went exploring! And I've also been doing the mages guild quests, because they are so fun.
The thing is, I can generally kill them at that level. With some difficulty, of course - but that's part of the fun! But when I can't defend myself, It's less fun :-(.PS4 - EU

✭✭✭To me it sounds like your trying to take on too high of enemies and they have higher defense than your spells have damage. Try Zebugs method of going back and trying to fight something around your level.0
