I Thought Crafted Items at Least Had Better Base Stats?

While we all know that dropped items can come with set bonuses and enchants that are better than anything that crafters can make (thus making the items overall far better), I thought, at the very least, crafted items typically came with slightly higher damage and armor values than dropped items.

Last night I had a one-handed axe drop from veteran Spindleclutch called the Ax [sic] of Sacrifice. It's VR4, epic, and deals 117 damage. Earlier that day I had just crafted a one-handed VR4 epic sword, but it only deals 115 damage.

Why can't crafting at least be marginally useful?

You are sure the axe was not buffed by a trait? I find I can give my VR2 son better stuff, by just a bit, than he can find.

A bit over dramatic I think for 2 damage.
That being said I have also seen both +/- a few damage between looted and crafted gear of the same level.
Personally I think a bit of RNG is a good thing.

by crafting a one-handed vr4 epic sword, do you mean you crafted a regular sword, then upgraded it to epic, or do you mean you obtained a white/green/blue sword, and upgraded it to epic?

As far as I'm aware it isn't possible to actually craft an epic item, and I wouldn't particularly expect a dropped sword upgraded to epic to be better than a found epic.

However, I would expect a crafted sword upgraded to epic to be better than a found epic.

Alternatively, is it possible the dropped epic had an enchantment that increased it's damage?
