Research Projects - Crafting, Insane timers, and NO ability to cancel?

So I was crafting and I accidentally hit the wrong research project on an item, It seems now that I will have to wait over 12 hours in order to fix the mistake.... I mean really 12 hours? 6 is too long, let alone 12... Especially if there is no way to cancel.

Is there a way to cancel a research project? Or am I just *** for the next 12 hours?

Yeah, 12 hours is nothing...it scales exponentially (power of 2 * 3hours) until it reaches 32 days w/o skill reductions.

I like the long times, makes crafting of some real value in game, especially when a person can say "full crafter all traits" now that is somebody!

Really? You're "*** for the next 12 hours"? Imagine you did that on the 32-day researches LOL

Oh, while we're ranting, can I please have that rare trait back that I was keeping for research and accidentally disconstructed?

Yep. That's where I'm at. I research a new item like every two or three weeks if I'm lucky (I have 3 research slots). Crazy but that's just the way it is. Tried using an alt to do some research too but it doesn't work like that. Each char has to do its own research.

I don't have a problem with the time it takes to research. Like someone else said it makes crafting mean something. But, I do agree that research timers need a cancel button. I've it the wrong one a few times and had to wait 12-24 hrs. to retry which, is just silly.

it's not that big of a deal, as you're probably gathering from responses, 12 hrs is nothing for research time.

Man are you in for an unpleasant surprise as you rank up the research. Haha

I kinda like it though. Something about the long timers makes me feel like I accomplished something significant, despite the fact that all I did was press a button and the blog off lol

The great thing about the 28 day research is that you don't have to check every day to see if a research slot is open. Just mark the calendar and come back in a month.

35 more days and I'll have enough research done for a 5 piece 8 trait set.

Yep, I made a quick calculation the other night: I'm playing heavy armor with swords.

That means I'm always researching traits at the Forge. 7 pieces of armor + 2 types of weapons, both multiplied by 8 traits, that is 762 hours of research by 9 items, which totals to 6,858 hours - roughly 286 days - and that's if I was nuts enough as to set my alarm clock and log in the minute one search is over to launch another(hehe, no no, I hate alarm clocks, they're life killers).

I do find this crafting business a bit overdone to be honest. I mean babies get faster done than this - and they come with a lot more traits than 8...

well being a master craft then means something then doesn't it people. Anything of worth in life isn't easy. All this means is if you want to be a master crafter then you have to put the time and sacrifice into it.

If you can't wait 12 hours for a 2nd trait you're going to have a really rough time with the rest of research.

No they don't. They basically come with 5: eat, puke, poop, sleep, cry. It takes years for them to research the really useful traits like "speak", "walk", "earn your own money" and stuff. :)

How do you guys hit the wrong ones?

You have to select the piece of armor you want, then the trait, then pick a piece of armor to research that trait from, and after you've done that, you still have to confirm that you want to do it.

And OP: as others have stated, 12 hours is nothing. You'll be fine.

It's a total of roughly 4 1/2 months (if you were to talent the full 3/3 in research time reduction the first day) to have all 8 traits on every thing in the game. We're at the 3 month mark and already we're seeing folks with between 1-6 or so 8-traits done, I personally have 6 done and 5 in research right now. After this time period you're done, it's over, no more inventory space taken up for research, no more logging in just to slap another trait into research. Being "stuck" for 12 hours is something those of us who have been going since 5 day early access would kill for right now hehe.

PHHT...I would love research to 12 hours. Most of mine see to DAYS. A day, okay, but 4-5 days? Meanwhile my bag space fills up waiting to do more research.
  • jamie.goddenrwb17_ESO
I do agree with OP about one thing. A cancel button would be nice.

It could still destroy the object you were researching and not really give anyone too huge an advantage.

Heavens forbid that you actually have to think twice and consider the consequence of your action.
And really, for the 12 hour research you dont need to think, just pop it in, its when you get to 6 days and above that you really want to think what trait on what piece of armour you start researching.
I really like it, even though I have made many misstakes, like thinking someone would actually wear heavy armour.
Attention Zenimax: Stamina builds don't hold up to magicka builds, and this is causing most of your class imbalance. It makes melee weapons and bows weaker than staves and class abilities. It makes medium and heavy armor less desirable than light armor. Fix this imbalance, and you'll address most of your balance issues.

The biggest annoyance with research is keeping track of what you have researched and what traits you have available for research (I keep a notebook and pencil - it's pretty low-tech but works fairly well). 12hrs is nothing and presumably you would eventually want to research that anyway.

I have it already, but unless I'm using it wrong, it doesn't account for things you've got stored for later research and mules. I'm quite happy with pencil and paper.

If someone can make so many clicks to accidentally put the wrong item for research, then it is just as doable to hit cancel by mistake. Imagine the rage thread of someone that accidentally canceled a 25 day research at, for example, 4 days remaining.

Lets leave the cancel button out and lets be careful what we do.

In a way, the lengthy research times are good bcoz it separates the serious crafters from those that don't have the patience for it. Helps to make it worthwhile to be a crafter. Perhaps raising the demand and value of player-crafted items?

Agreed. Being able to cancel will likely leave a loophole open for exploit. Someone who can research an item without having to destroy it.
